WHAT THE STUDIES ACTUALLY FOUND 🧠🐾

Fresh, whole, balanced diets don’t just look healthier, science shows they can change a dog’s life.

As someone who has formally studied canine nutrition, I’ve spent years understanding how diet directly impacts behaviour, performance, immunity, and emotional stability in dogs.

From nutrient balance, digestion, raw and cooked feeding models, and how food choices influence everything from coat condition to cognitive health.

Applying this knowledge has allowed me to tailor feeding plans that complement behaviour work, helping dogs think more clearly, recover faster, and maintain calm, consistent energy.

At Invictus Squad, nutrition isn’t an afterthought it’s the foundation that supports every part of training and welfare.

Your dog’s diet is more than food it’s fuel for a longer, happier, healthier life.

Sometimes, words alone don’t cut it. I find infographics incredibly helpful as they can turn complex topics about dog behaviour, training, and welfare into something easily digestible. Please feel free to share the poster in a bid to educate more dogs owners.

There’s a post on nutrition each day this week so keep your eyes peeled for some amazing snippets of information ✌️

Anyone else save the veggies from a Sunday lunch?

Fresh Food = Longer Life 🥦🐾

Dogs fed a fresh, varied diet live up to 3 years longer than those on processed food alone.
That’s three extra years of adventure, recall sessions, and trust built together. 🐕💚

Research shows:
✨ Fresh diets support longevity and lower cancer risk
✨ Veg-rich meals improve skin, coat & gut health
✨ Lean, balanced feeding keeps dogs healthy for life

Start simple 👇
✅ Keep a complete & balanced base (I personally feed raw)
✅ Rotate toppers: sardines, eggs, kefir, berries, greens, pumpkin
✅ Keep portions lean

Fresh food isn’t a fad it’s a proven path to better health and longer life. 🌿

They did not know the reason why,
The planes would roar across the sky,
A master’s call, a whistle blown,
And off they ran through lands unknown.

They carried words through shot and flame,
No fear could break their steady aim,
Messenger dogs, through smoke and wire,
They ran through hell, through mud and fire.

They searched for wounded in the rain,
Their paws fell soft on fields of pain,
With gentle teeth and patient eyes,
They pulled the fallen back to life.

As sentries through the endless night,
They stood where men had lost their sight,
They barked at shadows, sensed the wrong,
Their courage kept the weak hearts strong.

In mines and traps their noses led,
They walked where even angels dread,
Each step a gift, each breath a chance,
To keep their masters’ safe advance.

And when the guns fell still at last,
They lingered where the dying passed,
Beside the men who could not stand,
They laid their heads in trembling hands.

They did not know of hate or pride,
Of reasons why so many died,
They only knew one sacred law—
To love, to serve, to stand in awe.

So mark their names in silence deep,
Where loyal hearts forever sleep,
For though they never sought renown,
They wore the bravest kind of crown.

We are proud to work together with our local communities to provide education around dogs.

🐾👶 Why Working With Children Under 5 and Educating Them About Dogs Matters

At Invictus Squad, we believe education starts early not just for dogs, but for the little humans growing up beside them.

When we teach children under 5 how to read, respect, and relate to dogs, we aren’t just preventing accidents ,we’re building empathy, understanding and emotional intelligence that lasts a lifetime.

💚 Here’s why it matters:

1️⃣ Better behaviour & social skills
A study from The Kids Institute (2020) found preschoolers who regularly play or walk with their family dog show 30–40 % fewer behaviour problems and 34 % higher prosocial scores than those who don’t.
That means calmer, more connected children and happier, more confident dogs.

2️⃣ Learning through interaction
Dogs give children consistent, non-verbal feedback — helping them develop patience, communication skills and emotional regulation. Studies (Hall et al., 2016; Hawkins et al., 2023) show that positive child-dog interaction supports social competence, self-control and motivation to learn.

3️⃣ Safety through education
Most dog bites involving children happen before age 5 and almost always with familiar dogs. Early teaching (“gentle hands,” “dog is resting,” “ask before touching”) builds safe habits, trust, and respect on both sides.

4️⃣ Building empathy early
When a child learns to recognise a wag, a shake-off, or a yawn as communication not misbehaviour they begin to understand emotional language at its purest form.

🌿 This is what we do at Invictus Squad:
We don’t just train dogs we educate families working in our local communities. Our sessions focus on understanding both sides of the leash: child, dog, and the bond between them.

🟧 Book Now to learn how to build safe, respectful connections between dogs and young children.

Giving those tilers a run for their money at headquarters 😂

Being lead behaviourist for the rescue it’s been a busy few weeks all round but …. So close to the end goal!

It’s not about motivation it’s about dedication 👌

🧠 Food vs Toy Motivation in Dogs 🐾

Not every dog is food driven
Not every dog is toy driven
And that’s perfectly normal

When we talk about motivation, what we’re really talking about is what lights up your dog’s brain what taps into that internal reward system that says, “Yes, this is worth it.”

Some dogs are motivated by consumption the act of eating satisfies them, calms them, and provides clarity. Others are driven by possession and chase the thrill of movement, the control of a toy, the satisfaction of a grip.

Both are valuable. Both are natural. Both can be increased, both require the right handling.

👉 Food-motivated dogs need structure, they can become frantic or unfocused if food is given too freely.
👉 Toy-motivated dogs need clarity and control ,otherwise play turns into chaos, frustration, or conflict.

At Invictus Squad, we don’t force dogs to “fit” a reward.
We adapt the training to match the dog’s genetic and emotional make-up.

Because true motivation isn’t about what we think is rewarding
it’s about what the dog tells us it is!
