☀️ 31°C in Cornwall ☀️
While we’re experiencing this incredible heatwave this week , my usual dog walking routines will change. Standard tarmac pavements are already hot enough to blister paws! 🐾
If you're wondering how to safely exercise your dog today, here is my quick guide:
🚫 AVOID the midday heat in the woods: While the trees offer some shade, the air under a dense canopy can get incredibly stagnant, heavy, and humid during peak sun. Keep woodland walks to the very early morning or late evening.
🚫 AVOID the beaches at midday: Sand gets just as scorching hot as tarmac! If you can't comfortably hold the back of your hand to the sand for 7 seconds, it will burn your dog's paws.
✅ TRY a sensory 'brain game' at home: Skip the walk entirely during the hottest hours. Stuff a Kong or a favorite toy with dog-safe peanut butter or wet food and pop it in the freezer. It tires them out mentally without overheating them!
🐱 For cats: Don't forget that white or pink-eared cats can easily get sunburned while lounging on sunny stone walls or patio slabs. A dab of pet-safe sunblock on their nose and ears goes a long way.
🐰 For rabbits & small furries: Hutches can become absolute ovens today. Pop a couple of ceramic kitchen or bathroom tiles in the fridge for an hour, then place them in your rabbit's run. They will love lying flat on them to cool their bellies!
⚠️ Quick Reminder: Please check outdoor rabbits for flystrike twice a day in this 31°C heat, as flies are highly active right now.
Enjoy the sun safely!
