Happy National Fox Day! 🦊
Did you know that foxes and dogs are actually distant cousins? They both belong to the Canidae family, which explains why you might sometimes see a wild fox displaying some very dog-like behaviors—like pouncing on toys, burying bones, or wagging their tails!
While we specialize in looking after your beloved canines and domestic pets, we always have a soft spot for our wild, red-furred neighbour’s.
Here are a few fascinating facts about these clever creatures in honor of their special day:

Fantastic Hearing: A fox can hear a watch ticking from 40 yards away! Their incredible hearing helps them detect small rustles in the grass or under the snow.

Cat-Like Qualities: Foxes are the only members of the dog family that can retract their claws. They also have vertical pupils, which helps them see brilliantly in the dark, just like cats.

True Homebodies: Foxes use their dens mainly to raise their cubs in the spring, preferring to sleep out in the open under the stars during the rest of the year.

Whether your dog loves tracking scents on our walks or just curling up like a little fox at home, we love keeping them happy, active, and safe.

☀️🐾 Too Hot for Paws? How to Keep Your Dog Safe!
As the temperatures rise, we all love soaking up the sun—but our furry best friends handle the heat a lot differently than we do. Since dogs can’t sweat like us (and wear permanent fur coats!), it’s up to us to keep them cool.
Here are our top tips for safe summer strolls:

1. The 5-Second Asphalt Test 🗺️
Before heading out, place the back of your hand flat on the pavement. If you can’t comfortably hold it there for 5 seconds, it is too hot for your dog’s paws! Stick to the grass or opt for an indoor playtime instead.

2. Walk During the “Cool Zones” ⏰
Avoid peak sun hours (10 AM to 4 PM). Switch your routine to early morning walks or late evening strolls when the air and ground have cooled down.

3. Hydration is Key 💧
We always carry fresh, cool water and a collapsible bowl on our walks. If you’re out with your pup, make sure to offer water breaks every 15 minutes.

4. Know the Signs of Heatstroke ⚠️
Keep a close eye on your pup. Watch out for:
Heavy, frantic panting
Excessive drooling
Lethargy or weakness
Bright red gums
Need backup during the heatwave? We closely monitor the weather and adjust all our dog walking schedules to ensure your pup stays safe, hydrated, and cool. Whether that means shaded grass walks or substituting a walk for an air-conditioned indoor cuddle and potty break, your pet’s safety is our #1 priority.

🐾 4-Legged Heroes of WWII 🐾

In honor of VE Day, we’re looking back at the incredible animals whose bravery helped change the course of history. While we enjoy our walks and house sits we remember the paws, wings, and hooves that served on the front lines. 🇬🇧
Check out these amazing facts:

• Smoky the “Yorkie Doodle Dandy”: This tiny 4lb Yorkshire Terrier was found in a foxhole in New Guinea. She famously saved an airfield by pulling a telegraph wire through a 70-foot-long pipe that was only 8 inches wide—doing in minutes what would have taken 250 men three days to dig!

• Brian the Paratrooper: A rescue dog who became a fully qualified paratrooper. He was trained to ignore the sound of gunfire and famously parachuted into Normandy on D-Day to help detect mines and alert his unit to approaching danger. 🪂

• The “Animal Victoria Cross”: The Dickin Medal was established in 1943 to honor animal gallantry. To date, it has been awarded to 32 messenger pigeons, 18 dogs, 3 horses, and 1 cat!

• Beauty the Wire-Haired Terrier: One of the first “rescue dogs,” Beauty served during the Blitz in London, using her incredible nose to locate people trapped deep beneath the rubble of bombed buildings. 🐕‍🦺

Our pets today might only have to “battle” for the best spot on the sofa, but the legacy of these brave animals lives on in every loyal companion we walk.

Safety Update: Batten down the hatches!

With very strong winds forecast for today, we wanted to update all our lovely Red Wellies clients on our plans.
Your pet’s safety is our top priority. While we will make every effort to get to all our scheduled visits, walks may look a little different during these strong winds. If the gusts are too strong for a safe stroll, we’ll pivot to:
• Quick garden toilet breaks to keep paws on the ground.
• Extra indoor playtime and enrichment to burn off that energy.
• Loads of cuddles and attention to keep them calm and happy.
We’ll keep you updated if there are any major disruptions. Stay safe and warm out there!
