What is the HHHHHMM Quality of Life Scale for Senior Dogs?
It was created by a veterinarian Dr Alice Villalobos to help dog owners assess their dog's quality of life.
The letters stand for Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility and More good days than bad.
Each element is given a score from 1-10 , where 10 is the highest score and 1 the lowest.
A score of at least 5 in each element is acceptable.

This may help you assess your dog's health and wellbeing to make difficult end-of-life care decisions
It doesn't make the decision easier. Nothing can do that. But it may help give you guidance and a little peace of mind.

"Letting go is an act of profound love"

Love me but let me go...
In the twilight of my days, I feel the world differently, the scent of memories lingering in the air like familiar ghosts. The once sprightly steps have softened into a gentle pace, and the twinkle in my eyes mirrors the countless tales etched upon my soul.
I sense their gaze, my human's eyes reflecting a blend of love and sorrow. I feel the warmth of their touch, a delicate acknowledgment of the shared journey that stretches back through the corridors of time. In the creases of their furrowed brow, I decipher the silent dialogue—an intimate conversation tethered by a thread of devotion.
The sun-dappled moments of our youth replay in the theatre of my mind. The laughter that echoed in the fields, the bounding leaps that painted the canvas of our joy—I hold them close, like treasures in the chest of a bygone era. Yet, there's a knowing, an unspoken understanding that whispers through the rustle of leaves—we've reached a poignant juncture.
Pain, like a subtle undertow, tugs at the edges of my being. I catch the worry in their eyes, the gentle strokes tinged with a bittersweet tenderness. Their hands cradle my weary frame, each touch a love letter written in the language of touch—a language that transcends words, a silent promise to navigate this inevitable farewell.
I sense the uncertainty in their hesitations, the unspoken question that hangs heavy in the air. "Is it time?" they wonder, their gaze a mixture of hope and heartache. As their confidant through seasons of life, I wish I could reassure them, ease the burden that weighs upon their shoulders. If only I could convey that the love we've woven is an eternal thread, and that letting go is an act of profound love.
In the quiet moments, I feel a gratitude that surpasses the limitations of canine expression. Gratitude for the shared sunsets, the whispered secrets carried by the wind, and the sanctuary of their unwavering presence. As they wrestle with the decision, I find solace in the fact that our bond is not confined to the ticking of the clock—it transcends the boundaries of time and space.
And so, in the gentle embrace of their arms, I surrender to the ebb and flow of life. I feel their tears fall like the gentlest rain, each drop a testament to the symphony of emotions that bind us. As I embark on this final journey, I carry with me the echoes of our shared adventures—the laughter, the tears, and the silent whispers of a love that endures, even in the silence of goodbye.

This is so true. It encapsulates my thoughts on pet euthanasia beautifully. It's so very, very sad but so necessary at the same time.

Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is never, ever easy but always remember that we have the privilege to be able to make the decision that ends their suffering in the kindest of ways 🌈❤️

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.
You will be sad, I understand;
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.
We've had so many happy years -
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come, so let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend
And please stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Please do not grieve - it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years -
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.
