March ‘26 - NEW BUILD DRY STONE WALL, Dunning, Perthshire - 33 linear meters, Strathearn Sandstone.

Phase 2 of a project we started in summer’25, and it was a pleasure to be back working for these clients. (10mins from my door is a bonus)

The wall really adds to the property and gives it even more character.
We really appreciate the opportunity to build walls like this - the clients could have put a new fence up, or a hedge etc. but they opted to invest in something with real longevity and presence.

This wall has been a great advertisement - pulling in a few new jobs/clients on a fairly busy road.

One to smile at when passing in the future 👌

Jan/Feb ‘26 - NEW BUILD DRY STONE WALL, Murthly, Perthshire - 30 linear meters, fieldstone & Strathearn Sandstone

This was our first big undertaking of 2026 - and despite the weather at the time was a real pleasure.

Stunning surroundings at an amazing property - this wall will age really nicely in such natural environment. We were looked after very well on this job (thanks .birkbeck) with unlimited teas/coffees and snacks! It made a huge difference in the terrible weather.

We love features - but this wall was great to get a long stretch with two cheekends, some big foundations and neat copes.

Great start on the bigger job front for 2026!

Jan’25 - DRY STONE RETAINING WALL & STEPS REBUILD, Dunning, Perthshire.

This was the first decent sized job of 2026 after our Christmas break - this wall was an absolute pleasure to build for extremely hospitable clients, who granted us full access to their onsite facilities (and some cakes/biscuits)

This was a really enjoyable mix of stone, we brought in several tonnes of Strathearn Sandstone and used that alongside the on-site existing slate from the original wall. We pulled the wall forward which consumed a huge amount of packing and internal building stone.

The new steps were the main focal point of the build using reclaimed whin kerbs for the risers and reclaimed cobbles for the tread - Using natural stone always blend nicely with a natural dry stone wall. The other set of steps were more natural and less formal, for folk to nip up instead of walking all the way to the ‘big steps’.

Flat copes were opted this time round and Hazel the gardener will be able to work soil heights and replanting. Looking forward to seeing this wall settle in.

A little bit about
Come and enjoy the small, family-run working farm just outside the beautiful conservation village of Dunning. Nestled in a peaceful elevated spot on the south side of Strathearn, Pitmeadow Farm Holidays offers a range of cosy holiday rental properties alongside home-reared lamb & pork, fresh eggs, homemade jams, chutneys and more - all straight from the farm. (All very delicious)

They also have an amazing hire space perfect for small weddings, events, workshops & classes, complete with full kitchen facilities.

Dec’25 - DRY STONE RETAINING WALL & STEPS, Balquhidder, Perthshire.

Phase 2 from a project started in 2024 - this time there was a lot less wheel barrow action as it was a smaller wall, yet the height drop, step position and curves still gave us something to think about. The stone from on site blended in well with the previous work.

The weather was pretty bad during this job, so everything got turned to mush, luckily the clients are very understanding and supportive.

It’s always a joy to work at this property and we have phase 3 to look forward to in the not so distant future.

Nov’25 - DRY STONE BENCH (Manse renovation project), Glen Lyon, Perthshire.

This is one half of the main dry stone walling project at this property - the other was the dry stone bench forming the opposite boundary for a new garden area (shared previously)

The original remit was to remove around 35 linear metres of wall and build two new 11m walls coming off the existing wall at right angles. However, as the job started - and as you can see from the photos - the plans evolved and the project became something of a real passion build.

This curving ‘S’ wall was designed to evoke the meandering line of the River Lyon as it moves through the glen. We also built a lunky into this wall, taking inspiration from an original one that sits only around 50m away — a small nod to the traditional details already present in the landscape.

The clients were wonderful & open to ideas and creative input and essentially gave us the brief to “just build something beautiful - at whatever cost.”

The other main feature was the dry stone bench (posted previously). Its form and line draw from the profile of Beinn Dearg (Corbett), which sits above the property - we were quite literally working in its shadow for the entirety of the build

30odd meters of new build dry stone wall - field stone blended with Strathearn sandstone.

We really threw ourselves into this one, a proper passion project!

Lovely property/location + great clients + awesome mix of stone + the DSWP men = functionally fit & aesthetically pleasing walls

Nov’25 - DRY STONE BENCH (Manse renovation project), Glen Lyon, Perthshire.

This is one half of the main dry stone walling project at this property — the other is a curving ‘S’ wall forming the opposite boundary for a new garden area (I’ll share that separately).

We also spent a few days deer-proofing and repairing other walls across the property, with more walling still to rebuild around the new garage once it’s completed. It’s been a great project to be part of.

Built June’21 ‘my first double smoot’ - 4 years and 8 months of function….. when big rains come the water reaches the cover bands supposedly.
I did have to realign some of the copes when I stopped for these pics.

This smoot/smoot has survived 29 named storms and the below list are the Red Warning ones:

Arwen – Nov 2021 (red)
Eunice – Feb 2022 (red)
Babet – Oct 2023 (red
Darragh – Dec 2024 (red)
Éowyn – Jan 2025 (red)

Well done little wall 👌
