Driving heavy horses isn’t something you learn from a book. It’s a craft handed down through calloused hands, quiet mornings, and years of learning.
This kind of knowledge is earned — through years in the field, ring and yard.
Every time we harness up, we’re not just working horses — we’re carrying forward a legacy built on trust, patience, and pride.
These horses don’t just pull weight — they pull history.
And it’s our job to keep that history alive.

Here’s Tom, back behind the reins for the first time in a while, patiently teaching Hollie how to drive a team. With years of experience and stories in every move, decades of knowledge will carry on.

Our mission is to empower the next generation to carry this tradition forward, preserving the legacy for years to come.

Cate Brewster – The Queen of Harness
Cate Brewster has been the heart and soul behind the harness cleaning at Bandirran since 1982. What began as a personal task—keeping the harness in top shape for herself and her husband Tom Brewster—has grown into a full-scale operation. These days, Cate single-handedly turns around up to 15 sets of harness between shows throughout the season.
A true one-woman band, Cate’s attention to detail is nothing short of remarkable.
“I love cleaning the harness—I find it therapeutic,” Cate says. “Having travelled the world with curling and led a busy, hectic lifestyle, this is calming. Strangely.”

Over the decades, Cate’s quiet commitment has become essential to the smooth running of each show. Her work may happen behind the scenes, but its impact is front and centre — a testament to the pride, care, and tradition she brings to every piece of harness she touches.
