A gorgeous gathering ❤❤❤

The best kind of group to be in, residents of Bilbo's barn have a get together on their soft rubber area in the sunshine.

Having a😴zzzz😴 in the left corner our Harry then napping on the floor, Paphos and left to right, Misty, Strawberry, Chalky, Snowdrop, Toby and Beatrix.

What a special group of precious souls - we wonder if they each intuitively know each other's story 🤔

What a beautiful gathering of faces......❤

Every evening, after 5.00 pm, one or two of the team take the 'Sunset Bag' (a large bright yellow pvc shoulder bag) full of treats into the barns and across the paddocks to check all the four legged Flicka Family.

They know that bag from as far away as they can be!! 😅🥰😅

So no guesses needed to know what this little bunch are looking at!! 🥕🍎🍪🥕🍎🍪

It's Flickalphabet day!

Our gorgeous gentle giant Meg, our Mammoth Jackstock donkey, and as it's a Monday we thought we'd have a school day with a bit of history.....

The American Mammoth Jackstock is a breed of North American donkey, descended from large donkeys imported to the United States from about 1785. It started with a US president George Washington, with Henry Clay, who set out to improve American agriculture by creating stronger, more capable draft mules.

At the time, the young United States didn’t have donkeys large enough to sire the kind of mules he envisioned. That changed in 1785, when the King of Spain gifted Washington an Andalusian jack named Royal Gift, along with two jennets.

Soon after, the Marquis de Lafayette sent him a Maltese jack and two jennets. The other breeds that influenced the Mammoth Jack included the Baudet du Poitou, the Majorcan and the Catalan.

These elite European bloodlines transformed Washington’s breeding program. The offspring — especially a jack named Compound — produced exceptional working mules

By 1800, large donkeys were established in Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Missouri Territory, and interest in mule breeding exploded. Over the 1800s, thousands more large donkeys were imported from Spain (Catalonian and Andalusian), Malta, France (Poitou), Majorca, and Italy, creating the diverse foundation of the breed.

A formal registry began in 1888, later becoming the American Mammoth Jackstock Registry, which still exists today.

By the early 20th century, the national herd peaked at around five million animals, before declining with the rise of mechanised farming.

Unfortunately, due to their great size and in-breeding over the years, many do not have the best conformation and suffer with congenital issues like premature arthritis

We are very vigilant with Megs mobility issues, with specialist farrier care and on occasions injections for her arthritis.
At the moment she is doing very well and moving with great ease.

No matter what her ancestral history Meg is just a beautiful gentle girl adored by us all ❤❤❤

Our lovely senior boy Blue ❤

When we lost our lovely little Molly, we were so worried for Blue, we didn't know how he would cope after having such a strong bond with Molly. He has been 'ok' and spent some time with his friend Rhapsody, but then there are those times he stands alone, clearly missing his dear companion 😔

As long as he has his herd friends around him we hope time will be the eventual healer 🙏

Perfect for today, it is Matilda ❤

Matilda – shoved off a lorry, threatened with a stick, she arrived terrified, ears back with fear aggression, and then Violet happened 💞 Violet knew and she conveyed her reassurance to Matilda that she was safe. What a transformation occurred...

Today, on World Donkey Day, we celebrate the gentle souls all around the globe and those who call our sanctuary home - beings who are so often misunderstood, yet endlessly generous in spirit.

Donkeys are not stubborn. They are thoughtful, they pause, they assess, they protect themselves and each other. That is not defiance, it is intelligence, survival and wisdom earned over thousands of years of walking beside humanity.

Every donkey here has a story, many are unsure if kindness still exists, and yet, with patience and compassion, they show us something extraordinary: their ability to trust again, to form friendships, to play, to heal, to simply be.

Today is more than a celebration, it is a reminder, that these beautiful animals are not tools, not background characters, not creatures to be overlooked. They feel deeply, they remember kindness, they recognise faces, they form bonds. They deserve safety, respect, and a life free from fear, as do all our animal brethren.

Let’s honour the donkey today, those quiet thinkers, gentle companions, resilient survivors. It is a privilege to share their lives, to cherish, love and care for them.

Happy World Donkey Day from all of us at the sanctuary. May we continue to give them the peace and respect they deserve.....

Lily, saved with her Mum, from being separated and having a lifetime of servitude as a breeding machine......😔

She is such a happy soul, extremely brave and bossy, but very affectionate and just loves people ❤

Donkeys have been playing alot during the dry sunny days, it's usually boys, but the girls have been joining in too 🥰
