An update on yesterdays heatstroke dog.
Well firstly he’s alive! Thank goodness. Let me tell you the whole process of heat and our dogs…
When dogs overheat they use a lot of glucose in the act of cooling themselves and therefore need sugar! We actively cool them and stop at 39.5c to avoid hypothermia. But even with this the gut takes a massive hit.
For this dog bacteria leaked from the gut into the blood stream. The result was sepsis that kicked in around 90 minutes of returning to a more normal temperature.
The fight is firstly to control the body temperature and stop the brain from literally frying. Then it’s a fight to control sepsis in these severe cases.
Well after a lot of work from multiple vets and nurses he is looking like he’ll live to tell the tale. Such an unlucky dog to be put in that situation in the first place, but such a lucky one to have survived it.
