Hodge Lodge Hedgehogs

Hodge Lodge Hedgehogs Hodge Lodge is here to help in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of wild Hedgehogs 🦔

One of this week's admissions is Harry who came in after being 'heard' in a nesting box .
As you can hear from the video , he sounded extremely 'snotty' and wheezy. Although you may hear a hedgehog have a slight snore or a snuffle, this was more than that .

Harry also had a wound above his ear, in the brow area. I suspect this was from a fight with another hedgehog, possibly with resident hedgehog Horace, who had a similar wound on his nose and is from the same place .

Harry is big boy weighing 1kg and is being treated for 100s of Cap. Part of his treatment is sessions of nebulisation.... He thankfully seems to enjoy these.

He still has a way to go but he is improving 😁

Thankyou to the finders for their quick action , it does make all the difference x

Oh it's a hot one ! 😥
Hope you're all keeping cool ?!

I'm tinkering about today and putting in some final touches before I officially reopen (which is taking longer than expected 😔)

One for today is a smoke alarm and fire extinguisher. You can never be too careful where there's electrics heat and water !

The smoke alarm connects to my phone so i can be alerted when I'm not close by ... Isnt that cool lol

Thankyou to Ace Fire, Norwich

The 2nd Admission on Monday was Olive weighing 605g.

Olive had been spotted on a wildlife camera with a very swollen back leg and the finders were concerned so sought advice. They then spent a few days waiting for her to reappear so they could scoop her up.

On quick examination, Olive also had a wound on her side/head which had already become infected but other than this, and her leg , her body condition was good.

Olive was given pain relief and antibiotics before any further examination to ensure she was comfortable as could be.
After a shallow anti bacterial bath , I was able to look at her leg and was shocked and saddened to see how swollen and infected that it was. So much so that I'm not going to share a picture.

My gut was telling me there was nothing more i could do but I spoke with another rescue and Olive visited a vet .... Both agreed there was nothing more that could be done. Olives whole leg was infected , right to the bone. Her other wound was also really deep and infected . So the kindest thing was to let her sleep forever.

What happened to Olive , I do not know . But , I do know she was a warrior , a fighter, right to the end.

Thankyou to the finders and everyone else for helping Olive sleep without pain 😓

Monday morning a call came for a hedgehog looking unwell in a communal garden . An 800g Female hedgehog who was named Hildegard. She was cold so placed in an incubator and once warmed given fluids. After a few hours, and a few checks, she was standing up looking at me through the door . 'Yey' I thought. I left her be and checked on her again a little while later. When I checked her again she had died ! 😰 I couldn't believe it . She must have been incredibly poorly on the inside 😔

Sorry I couldn't help you Hildegard .....Rest In Peace 😓

Thankyou to the finder for acting quickly to get her help x

Yesterday I got a call about a hedgehog found in a car park .... A large (almost 1kg!) female with no apparent injuries. I named her Bridget.

Bridget was admitted, made comfortable in an incubator and given time to warm up before being given fluids etc . After a few hours she sadly passed away 😓 .

It wasn't until after her passing that I was able to see her hind leg , that was tucked right in , was possibly broken. The picture shows her on admission. With this and her posture/movements under observation I would say possible pelvic or spinal injury too 😓

A precious life gone but at least she was safe, warm and comfortable.

Thankyou to her finders for picking her up and getting her help x

Oralade is made with a natural chicken flavour which encourages increased fluid intake. Its unique Isotonic formula provides fast absorption to help restore the natural balance of water, essential electrolytes and simple sugars for optimum hydration and gut health and recovery..... A little something else to help those poorly hogs get on the road to recovery x

Say hello to Horace 😊

Horace arrived a few days ago after being heard 'snoring' in a nest box.
The finder was right to ask for advice because the snoring was in fact nasal congestion from Lungworm. He also had a wound near his nose , which I suspect could be from a fight .

Horace was 805g on arrival, is gaining and healing nicely as well as responding well to treatment 😁 (fingers crossed this will continue 🤞)

Thankyou to the finder for getting advice ,
Thankyou to my fosterer for collecting and having Horace to do all the cleaning whilst I'm still recovering from my operation 🥰
