On this day, 1578, Queen Elizabeth I made her way from Bracon Ash to Norwich as part of her “Royal Progress” across the country.

This trip caused much excitement for Norwich, with no expense spared to welcome her. She was met by cheering crowds, elaborate pageants, decorated streets, and an extravagant welcome from Norwich’s mayor and aldermen - all desperate to impress the monarch and prove the city’s loyalty.

Edmund Wood (who would have lived in what is now Anteros) was set to greet the Queen himself and regale her with stories from our fine city, but unfortunately, the heavens opened and she had to go to shelter.

Our favourite story (suggested to have been created for this visit) is about a Viking Earl and his pet polar bear. We rarely share this story as it's a legend and not a historical fact, but if you come along to our Matriarchs, Mayors and Merchants Tour, you may be lucky enough to hear it for yourself.

Today, we kicked off the next stage of training for Frances and Gary! They told us they wanted to learn even more, and take the reins on more, of our tours. So, of course, we got cracking.

We love watching our guides grow their knowledge, swap stories, and add their own flair to Norwich’s history. We can’t wait for you to see them in action.

There's some suspicious history information knocking around this city, so who ya gonna call? Mythbusters! (This is just our tour guides armed with history research and sometimes a torch, don't get TOO excited.)

First up, the secret tunnel the monks at Norwich Cathedral built so they could go and drink at the Maid's Head Hotel...

Despite what the excellent legends will tell you, there are NO confirmed tunnels under the cathedral. So how do we have these pictures of haunted (uncaffeinated) tour guides in "tunnels" under the Cathedral? Simply, they are bunkers designed to protect the students and staff at the Norwich School. If you were really unlucky, lessons would still run whilst you were down in these extensive passages - but we suppose it's better than being a firewatcher, putting out incendiary bombs with buckets of water!

Also, monks brewed their own beer and cider and often had about eight pints of one of these delicious drinks allocated to them alongside their meal allowance. Free beer and cider sounds much better than the stuff you pay for at the pub!

So unfortunately, if there are monks haunting THESE tunnels, it's got nothing to do with them sneaking out anywhere - must just be for fun, same as the tour guides.

Our tour guides go on many adventures - both for work and in their personal time. One of them sent this recently, and it took us longer to place it than we should have! What a view. 🤩

Do you know where our guide was when she snapped this?

🎉 Happy Birthday, George Skipper! 🥳

On this day in 1856, George Skipper was born. He gave Norfolk some of its most extraordinary buildings; the Royal Arcade, Jarrolds, Hotel de Paris and of course… the Magnificent Marble Hall.

The most famous quote about him, by Sir John Betjeman is: "he is altogether remarkable and original. He was to Norwich what Gaudi was to Barcelona" and we agree.

🕰️ THEN vs NOW: The Murderers 🍻

From gruesome Victorian stories to a lively city pub (especially when the Canaries play), The Murderers has seen it all. Still one of our favourites and the place we end our Tavern Trail Tours, we thoroughly recommend trying it out if you haven't before.

Here is a Plunkett vs a tour guide today photo comparison!

POV: You’re a Victorian in charge of childcare over the summer holidays. 🐐

No screens. No soft play. Just shove the toddler in a tiny cart pulled by a goat and hope for the best.

The Great Yarmouth seafront has always been a place of wild, joyful, slightly chaotic fun - from donkey rides and pier shows to roller-skating and yes, goat carts. Some things have changed (shoutout to our health and safety team), but the eccentric seaside magic lives on.

🐚 We’re running our Seafront History Tours all through the summer - full of strange, silly and suspicious stories your whole family will love.

✨ Fact-packed. Family-friendly. No goats. ✨

Hidden History of Norwich Tours by KindaKafe

The popularity of our charity run Hidden History of Norwich Tours continues to amaze us. In less than 1 year attendance of our unique tours has grown exponentially, hundreds of local residents, day visitors and tourists now visit on a weekly basis to explore the fascinating ‘hidden street’ which lies deep beneath KindaKafe, our community cafe on Castle Meadow.

In November 2018, the Eastern Daily Press nicknamed this historic space ‘Norwich’s own Diagon Alley’ in an excellent ‘Weird Norfolk’ feature which went viral. Thousands of people liked and shared the article and subsequent ITV news feature on social media generating phenomenal interest in our tours. At the time we were running 3-4 tours a month and we now run 14 a week!

KindaKafe is owned by the Missing Kind charity and operates as a social enterprise with proceeds from our tours supporting our work to build community and reduce social isolation and loneliness in Norwich.

The charity first purchased the grade 2 listed building, which was once home to Ponds - one of Norwich’s oldest Shoe Fitters, in 2014 without knowing the historical importance of the levels below. Members of the public were first invited to explore the space during Heritage Open Days 2017. Since then we have worked with local historians, archaeolgicalists and storytellers to fully understand the history and how best to bring it to life for the benefit of local residents and visitors.
