๐จ New Dog Law Alert โ Now in Force (18th March) ๐จ
Today marks a BIG change for dog owners across England & Wales when it comes to dogs around livestockโฆ and itโs one every owner needs to understand ๐
A new law has officially come into force to better protect farm animals from dog attacks and โlivestock worryingโ (that includes chasing, stressing or attacking).
๐ So whatโs changed?
โ๏ธ Unlimited fines
Previously capped at ยฃ1,000, now there is no limit to what you could be fined if your dog worries livestock.
โ๏ธ Stronger police powers
Police can now:
โข Seize and detain dogs
โข Enter premises to gather evidence
โข Use things like DNA evidence in investigations
โ๏ธ No contact needed for it to be an offence
If your dog chases or causes distress to livestock, thatโs enough.
๐ง Why this matters
Livestock worrying isnโt just โa bit of chasingโ
It can lead to:
โข Injured or killed animals
โข Miscarriages in pregnant livestock
โข Huge emotional and financial impact on farmers
And this isnโt rare. Around 87% of sheep farmers reported attacks in 2024.
๐พ What should YOU be doing?
Simple, responsible handling makes all the difference:
๐ Keep your dog on a lead around livestock
๐ Donโt assume โtheyโre friendlyโ means safe
๐ Read signs and respect farmland
๐ Train reliable recall, but donโt rely on it in high risk areas
This isnโt about scaring people, itโs about responsibility.
Most owners would never intentionally harm livestock
But lack of control is all it takes.
If your dog would chase, you need to manage that. Full stop.
Letโs raise the standard of dog ownership and keep everyone safe. Dogs, livestock, and owners included ๐
If youโre struggling with recall, control or reactivity outdoors this is exactly what we help with at LCA.
No judgement. Just proper training and support ๐
