👀 6 days to go — and today we're looking at how to READ your dog during fireworks.

Being able to spot the early signs of stress means you can step in before your dog reaches panic. Here's the stress ladder:

😊 Relaxed: soft body, loose wagging tail, normal breathing
😐 Mild stress: yawning, lip licking, ears slightly back, looking away
😰 Moderate stress: panting, trembling, pacing, hiding, seeking you out
🚨 Severe stress: drooling, barking, destructive behaviour, attempting to escape

One important myth to bust: comforting a scared dog does NOT reinforce their fear. That's an outdated idea. Your calm presence is reassuring and safe — go to them, sit with them, be their safe person. 💙

🐾 Halloween is TOMORROW — here's how to keep your dog safe and calm! 🎃 ✅ Keep treats well out of reach — chocolate and xylitol are toxic to dogs ✅ Give your dog a quiet space away from the door ✅ Use white noise to muffle doorbell stress ✅ Make sure your dog's ID tag is up to date! Stay safe, Northumberland! 💛

🐾 The power of CHOICE in dog training!
🌟 Giving your dog agency — letting them choose to engage with you, approach something new or leave a situation — builds confidence and trust like nothing else.
Force-free training empowers dogs rather than just commanding them! 💛

🐕‍🦺 Practical planning time! With one week to go, let's talk about exercise and walk timing on Bonfire Night.

In early November, it gets dark around 4–5pm — and that's often when fireworks start. Here's how to plan:

🌅 Walk earlier in the day — before 3pm is ideal on November 5th
🚷 Avoid evening walks once dusk falls
🏡 Check your garden for escape routes before letting your dog out after dark
📲 Set a reminder on your phone NOW for an early walk on November 5th

A well-exercised dog does tend to cope better, though exercise alone won't cure fear — it's one piece of the puzzle.

If you must let them in the garden after dark, go with them and stay close. 🐾
