🌞 Summer is officially here and that means it’s time to plan a worm egg count for your flock and herd.

🐓🐛 The aim is to do something every season through the year to keep a check on parasite levels and ensure a burden doesn’t get out of hand.

🥚🐛 It's very rare, though not impossible! There are occasional reports of poultry roundworms being found in or around eggs, usually linked to specific circumstances.

🐓 This comes down to how a hen’s body works. The digestive, urinary and reproductive systems all meet at one exit point, the cloaca. Eggs and droppings pass through the same area, so in unusual cases, parasites or their eggs can enter the egg as it forms.

🔬 It's not something most keepers will ever see, though it is a good reminder of why monitoring parasite levels matters.

🐓🌱 If the last time your flock had a worm egg count was in February, or before, then now is the time for your Spring worm egg count!

🐓🦃🦆 You can choose to test individual birds or a composite sample from groups that are housed together. We advise submitting one sample for every 5 birds if using this method with a larger flock. Only when the test indicates worms are present will you then need to step in with a treatment.

🐓💩 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝗼! Not the most glamorous topic, although it tells you a lot about bird health.

A “normal” dropping has two parts, a brown or grey solid section, plus a white cap. Most chickens will pass around 12 to 15 droppings a day. You may notice wetter droppings in hot weather or during stress. This is often linked to increased drinking or natural body responses.

Every so often, you will also see caecal droppings. These are mustard coloured, softer, and yes, quite smelly. They appear every 8 to 10 droppings and are a normal sign that the digestive system is working as it should.

🧐 Did you know that poultry can pick up worms directly from the ground or indirectly through insects, snails or earthworms!

In small numbers, parasites may not cause obvious problems, though higher burdens can impact health and productivity. Rather than guessing or treating unnecessarily, a simple worm egg count helps you take an evidence based approach to parasite control.

🔬 As well as a standard worm egg counts we also offer specific tests for liver fluke and lungworm. These tests use different techniques to target the eggs of these specific parasites.
