“There’s no point trialing a small dog… they can’t do the higher levels anyway.”

We overheard this recently and honestly? It couldn’t be further from the truth 🧡

Small dogs may work differently at times, but they are absolutely capable of progressing, succeeding and thriving in Scentwork trials.

The National Nosework Association has tiny dogs trialing right through the levels; Chihuahuas, Papillons, Miniature Dachshunds, Terriers, Frenchies, Shih Tzus and so many more 💪

Scentwork isn’t about size. It’s about problem solving, confidence, motivation and teamwork.

Here’s little Bear… all 3.8kg of him smashing this high hide in today’s workshop for Dream Dogs - dog training 🐻🔥

Small dogs doing Scentwork have our heart 🧡 So if you’ve ever thought your little dog “couldn’t” do it… this is your sign to give it a go.

Now let’s see your tiny scentwork superstars 👇

Our first ever Day at the Races Scentwork Camp at Perth Racecourse absolutely delivered.

Three days of dogs, searching, learning, problem solving, laughter, teamwork, questionable weather and slightly broken handlers 😅

Across the weekend teams worked with three different trainers, each focusing on different parts of the Scentwork picture:

🔹 Distractions, Distractions, Distractions with Kirsty (Canine Concerns Dog Training)
🔹 Indication Skills & Search Fitness with Mel (Little Rascals School for Dogs)
🔹 Variable Reinforcement and Calling it Clear with Shannon (K9 Track & Train)

We also ran our completely chaotic 🏇 Racecourse Scentwork Bingo where teams solved clues and completed searches across the racecourse grounds…

…followed by our 👑 double blind operational clean sweep scenario “The King Is Coming” 👑 where teams had to search and clear operational areas ahead of a royal arrival, working blind under pressure while communicating findings back to HQ and learning just how hard area clearance, prioritisation and trust in the dog can really be.

Safe to say the dogs absolutely smashed it 🏆

Thank you to everyone who came, supported the weekend and threw yourselves fully into every challenge. The atmosphere all weekend was incredible.

Huge thank you as well to:

Little Rascals School for Dogs and Canine Concerns Dog Training & Behaviour for helping make the weekend what it was!

There’s a lot of complex problem solving involved in Scentwork…

For example, Hudson is currently trying to work out if the hide is REALLY worth getting off the wall for, or if he can somehow just awkwardly creep round and indicate from there instead 😆

Without solid foundations, you don’t get the advanced stuff 👀🔥

This hide was blowing right to the back of the bales and Copper worked it all the way up.

Then gave me a mild heart attack coming back down 😆👏

Confidence, problem solving and commitment to odour all come long before the flashy searches.

Remember Iron Bru? 👀

The very unplanned puppy 😆

Now 10.5 months old and already showing some seriously exciting potential in her scentwork 🔥

Confidence, independence, problem solving… and an insane love for the game 👏 just like Copper!

Both bred by Aritaur Dobermanns!

How do you keep track of 27 hides? 👀

Apparently my highly sophisticated system is…

👉☝️ finger pointing 😆

(Please tell me I’m not the only one that does this)

One hide.
10 dogs.
A VERY interesting odour picture 👀🔥

The hide was placed in a very small wall hole at the back of the cell, but the odour was clearly traveling and gathering around the cell entrance - especially around the pool cue rack.

Some dogs caught odour from both sides of the cell entrance.
Some caught it from two cells away.
Some even picked it up from across the prison walkway!

Yet every single team worked it back in and problem solved their way to source 👏

Different breeds. Different search styles. Same hide.

And honestly? Even as a National Nosework Association judge, sometimes odour does something completely different to what you expect!

The best part? Every handler trusted their dog and let them work it out 🔥

Some achievements deserve their own moment 🔥

Massive congratulations to Theresia & Trix on staging up to National Nosework Association Excellent!

The third highest level currently in the NNA… and no small feat.

First of K9 Track & Train clients to reach this level and only the second team in Scotland 👏 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Watching this team grow has been something special 🌟 from their first NNA Foundation all the way through to Enhanced!

And doing it all with grit and determination even when things weren’t easy 🔥

So well deserved. Proud is an understatement!

Go smash NNA Excellent 🥊

That victory lap says it all 🏆

Double blind searches on the final day of our Day at the Races Scentwork Camp 2026 🐎✅

No help. No confirmation. Just trust in your training 👏
