How cute 🥹
This little man is Eric. Eric's owners reached out to me to help with basic training and jumping up. We started our first of 5 sessions within an enclosed field which is a new exposure for Eric. At first he was a little apprehensive but as you can understand, it's a hugeee world for such a tiny boy. We started off with a sniffari and allowing him to settle in to the environment with no pressure and low expectations. As the session went on, he slowly started coming out of his comfort zone and we have made great progress on his jumping up and eye contact today as well as proofing his sit 😍 we are really looking forward to the upcoming sessions and he will also be bringing along his older brother Teddy 🐻

Please feel free to pop me a message or enquire about our 5 week puppy foundations course. Alternatively you can call or message on 07988412178 or email me on [email protected] 📧

Name:Oscar😍
Breed:Sheepadoodle

Today we had the first of our 5 week puppy course sessions. Due to Oscar being 12 weeks old, we decided to customise the first session around the house and focused on teething and toilet training. This is because Oscar has only just had his second set of vaccinations and will not be able to venture into the big wide world for another 2 weeks. We have started this journey now to ensure training has started during his critical period of up to 14 weeks. These stages are vital. To manage our key points today,we have been working on redirecting Oscar's mouthing and heavily rewarding all positive, calm behaviour to prevent feeding his aroused moments and teething antics of being a baby shark with his owners hands 👀 🦈
In addition to this we have also introduced distance, duration and distraction whilst being sat to help proof this behaviour aswell as rewarding eye contact to the owner that Oscar displays on his own accord to help with the foundations of training in the coming weeks.
Enzymatic cleaner has also been recommended as puppies love to toilet on absorbant areas making carpet perfect which should help eliminate the odours Oscar can smell along with making sure when he toilets outside it becomes CIRCUS TIME!! All the treats, fuss and play to create a positive association with doing his business outside. 🎪 🤹 💫

Over the next 4 sessions we will be looking into:
🐾 Magic Blanket&Handling
🐾 Recall
🐾 Loose lead walking
🐾 Emergency stop as just a few.

Stay tuned for more on Oscar's puppy development and a whole lot of cuteness on your feed 🐶❤️

Gaining distance 🐾

Increasing the distance between the handler and the dog is one of three segments towards proofing a behaviour🐕

It not only increases the reliability but it also helps gain confidence, improves safety/focus and also contributes towards impulse control.

Training this gradually ensures the dog is more likely to reliabily respond without experiencing fallout or being overwhelmed making the recall more successful within training.

Rewarding this behaviour upon return to the handler also helps with the bond between dog and owner as it ensures a positive association upon returning to the owner🐾❤️

1-1 Recall sessions now available.

🎆 FIREWORKS🎆
Is your dog ready?
As bonfire night is fast approaching, I am sure many of you are already anxious about the way your dog is going to cope and unfortunately, in most areas, fireworks are set off for days or even weeks either side of bonfire night itself so being prepared can be difficult.

What can you do to help your dog?

🎇 Before the night comes, when your dog is settled, try to desensitise them to the noise. Play some firework videos on YouTube at a very low noise and overtime gradually increase the volume. Keep this exposure short and sweet and reward whilst settled.
🎇 Create a den or safe space for your dog that they can retreat to and have the choice to enter or exit this space on their terms.
🎇 Calming plug ins such as Pet Remedy to help relieve stress and anxiety. These also come in sprays and little wipes.
🎇 Do last toilet breaks earlier when it is light and less likely for fireworks to be going off. You can also take them out on a lead to be extra safe, especially when toileting areas are not enclosed spaces.
🎇 Shut all windows and have the telly or music on at a higher volume to help minimise the noise of fireworks. Classic FM seems to be a soothing music channel for dogs which is something we have found over the years.
🎇 Lastly, DO NOT make a big deal out of the fireworks. Although feeling anxious can come naturally, it is super important to be as calm as possible. Dogs are very good at being in sync with human emotions. They will soak up this anxiety and they will predict something is wrong. When the dog is worrying or showing signs of stress, ensure the environment provides as much safety and comfort as possible and try your best not to interact with your dog as this will only feed the behaviour. 🐾❤️

🐾 Beau🐾

Breed: Cockapoo.
Every one meet the beautiful Beau. Her owners asked me for some advice regarding separation anxiety as leaving the house when out of routine can be a struggle for her. With a spaying procedure on the horizon, Beau's owners responsibly wanted some help to get her more comfortable within her own company without going into panic mode, proventing potential further injury after her operation when being left due to the nature of the procedure .
When working through our consultation, we discussed which path would be easier for Beau and we came up with some homework for the owners with some guidance which is being practised in Beau's home on a daily basis.
Although the crate used to be a trigger for beau due to the fear of confinement, making an area with the crate and blocking off a larger space with training pen pieces around it has completely changed Beau's outlook and she now sees this as a safe space and it has massively helped her during her recovery. Leaving the house out of routine is still a working progress but the improvement from then to now is a great representation of the work from the owners.
I shall be continuing to work with Beau to recondition her emotional response of being left.
Follow along for her journey 😍

Recall 🐾

Teaching a reliable recall with your dog is so much than just responding to a cue. It's not just about safety but also giving your dog the freedom to do what dogs should be able to do too.

"Sniff and Explore"

Recall training can really help with the bond between you and your dog. It can be a confidence builder and means getting the most out of your adventures. Recall training takes time, consistency and sometimes... Lots of patience. But it becomes a skill that allows your dog to be just that (a dog) with healthy boundaries to protect them .

Some breeds may take a little more time such as terriers or sighthounds as these dogs have a higher prey drive meaning they may be easily distracted but with lots of hard work, recall can be a great foundation skill during any pups training.

As a trainer, I do come across lots of dogs who's recall are very inconsistent and they rarely listen to their owner. It is super important that your recall is consistent and reliable from your dog before allowing them off lead to help with the safety of others. Although our dogs are friendly, it doesn't mean other dogs are 🐾❤️

Eye Contact👀

No matter what age your dog is, eye contact is such a vital step within dog training that should be taught from the get go as a puppy.

It basically becomes the software to the majority of situations and environments.

It comes in handy when out walking , giving you the choice of who and what your pup interacts with.Getting that eye contact then ensures the dog is focused for which ever signal you give.

This natural behaviour in dogs is the key to understanding the way a dog is communicating as well as bonding between you and your dog 🔑🐾❤
