Special puppy/kitten litters, and group bookings of 3 or more animals arrangements/totally separate clinic sessions available - enquire via WhatsApp or email [email protected]. www.vetpetvac.co.uk Heat Stroke - far more common in dogs than cats. Animals can die from this - at the time or due to complications immediately afterwards 1/ More common in flat nosed, overweight dogs, and dogs with a very thick coat. 2/ Most dangerous weather for this is hot, humid and sultry days - because cats and dogs cool down mainly be panting and evaporative loss from their respiratory tracts. These sorts of days severley limit this. 3/ Signs- excessive noisy panting/eyes bulging/often very red gums/distressed/confused/often lay down on front to aid breathing/may be drooling. 4/ Prevention - common sense. Take dogs out in the early morning/late evening when cooler, for gentle exercise. If you have to take dogs out somewhere when hot, take planty of water/bowl. No long walks/major exercise/excessive playing, outside these times. No taking dogs when running or on a bicycle - I think this is totally unacceptable anytime, forcing them to run, but especially in hot weather. Do not leave in a car for anything but a short time - even if the windows are open. They still get very hot inside. 5/ First aid treatment - a/ Obviously stop exercise .b/ Take them in the shade, but not an enclosed area - you want plenty of airflow around them c/ Offer cold water and encourage to drink (not force) d/ pour cold water over them (not freezing water) e/ Quickly take to the vets if they do not gradually improve.
