ROUTINE EAR CLEANING. 1/ Have the correct, good quality ear cleaner. The nozzle is important - you need to fill the canal with cleaner. You cannot put too much down, but you can certainly use too litte, so not a nozzle that just dispenses drops. A nozzle so that when the container is squeezed, a good lot comes out and overflows from the canal. 2/ Not too often - for routine, about 2-4 x month is fine. Too often may make the ear sore. 3/ Very important, lubricate the swab/cotton wool/tissue before use, with the cleaner. Dry swab/cotton wool/tissue is quite abrasive, and may make the ear sore. 4/ Good sq**rt down. Allow the dog/cat to head shake (almost certainly will). Leave a little while to dissolve excess wax down there, then gently use the lubricated swab/cotton wool/tissue, on the end of a finger, to wipe out the ear . Do not put cotton buds etc, down the canal unless a Vet/Vet nurse, or you may block the canal by compacting debri down the canal.

Some poisoning emergencies become much more common this time of year (particularly if you have young children who accidently drop food/allow access of pets to food/sweets)
1/ Sultanas/raisins/currants/grapes (mince pies) are toxic to some dogs and cats, sometimes only a very small amount is needed.
2/ Chocolate - particularly dark/cocoa is toxic to cats and dogs.
3/ Flowers/plants- be very careful if you have cats, especially cats that do not go outside as they are more curious about flowers/house plants - many of which are toxic to cats. Lilies in particular are extremely toxic to cats. One type in particular, just takes a little pollen/water containing pollen to be very toxic. If you have cats, no lilies.
4/ Cold weather means antifreeze/screen wash. Is attractive to pets. Even a very small amount is usually fatal. Every years practices often see fatal cases of these.
