Did you know that plastic shelters can heat up surprisingly quickly in warm weather?

For rabbits and guinea pigs, a plastic hide sitting in the sun can become much hotter than the surrounding air, increasing the risk of overheating and heatstroke.

✅ Provide plenty of shade and ventilation
✅ Check shelters throughout the day
✅ Offer fresh water and cool resting areas
✅ Consider wooden shelters, which often stay cooler in hot weather

🌡️ Heatstroke is an emergency. If your pet seems lethargic, is breathing rapidly, or you're concerned they may be overheating, contact your vet immediately.

🐾 Skye's Amazing Recovery Story 🐾

Gorgeous Skye recently came to see us at Roundwood Vets after developing some sudden lesions on her nose and muzzle.

When a young puppy develops skin changes like these, there can be a number of possible causes. Thankfully, our fantastic in-house laboratory allowed us to investigate quickly. We were able to rule out several possibilities, including mites and bacterial infection, and a cytology sample (a close look at cells under the microscope) revealed lots of inflammatory white blood cells.

The findings were consistent with juvenile cellulitis, also known as puppy strangles, an uncommon inflammatory condition seen in young puppies.

The good news is that with a few weeks of treatment, pain relief, and plenty of love and cuddles from her devoted owners, Skye responded beautifully. 💚

Because of the medication she needed, we delayed her vaccinations while she recovered, but we're delighted to say she's now looking absolutely fabulous and is back on track with her preventative care.

Seeing her bright-eyed, happy and ready to take on the world has been wonderful. We can't wait for Skye to start enjoying all the adventures that puppyhood has to offer!

Handsome Wednesday recently visited us at Roundwood Vets for his vaccination, and he had his priorities firmly in order... treats first! 😸

He was so busy enjoying a tasty snack that he barely seemed to notice his vaccine being given. In fact, we're not entirely convinced he realised he was at the vets at all.

Wednesday was a star throughout his visit, happily accepting treats, fuss and plenty of compliments from the team.

It's always lovely to see cats feeling relaxed during their appointments, especially when a favourite treat helps make the experience even more enjoyable.

☀️🐶 Keeping Your Dog Cool in Hot Weather

As temperatures rise, it's important to help our dogs stay comfortable and safe. Dogs can struggle to regulate their body temperature, and hot weather can quickly become dangerous.

💧 Always provide plenty of fresh water
🌳 Make sure there is access to shade and cool resting areas
🚶 Walk early in the morning or later in the evening
🐾 Check pavements before walks to avoid burnt paws
🧊 Offer frozen dog-safe treats and enrichment toys
🚗 Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes

⚠️ Watch for signs of heatstroke:
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Lethargy or weakness
• Vomiting
• Difficulty breathing
• Feeling unusually hot to the touch

If you're concerned your dog may be overheating, seek veterinary advice immediately.

A little extra care goes a long way in helping your dog enjoy the summer safely. ❤️🐾

🐾 The Terrific Trio 🐾

Inka, Tinker and Sam recently visited us at Roundwood Vets for their second vaccinations.

These three were full of confidence, curiosity and charm, keeping our team entertained as they explored the consult room together. Despite being far more interested in investigating than posing for photos, they were all wonderfully brave and took their vaccinations in their stride.

It was a pleasure to see them, and we loved watching their personalities shine. 💚

🐾 Sox's Big Kitten Milestone Day 🐾

Hello, I'm Sox. 🖤🤍

Last week I visited Roundwood Vets for what the humans called a vaccination, microchip and flea treatment appointment.

The team seemed very impressed with my excellent sitting skills and my ability to make myself comfortable absolutely anywhere, including on top of my carrier with my favourite toy close by.

I had my vaccinations to help keep me protected as I grow, a microchip so I can always be identified if I ever decide to go on an unexpected adventure, and flea treatment to keep any unwanted hitchhikers away.

It sounds like a lot, but I took it all in my stride and was a very brave boy throughout.

Afterwards, I enjoyed plenty of treats, fuss before headed home.

🐾 Diego's Vaccine Day Adventure 🐾

Hello everyone, Diego here. 🐱

Last week I popped into Roundwood Vets for my vaccinations and, naturally, I brought my favourite duck along for support.

Now, some cats might feel a little unsure about a trip to the vets, but I was feeling pretty confident. Having Duck by my side certainly helped. After all, every important outing is better with your best friend.

The team were delighted to meet Duck, although I think they were even more pleased to see me. I was told I was a very good boy throughout my appointment, which came as no surprise whatsoever.

I handled everything like a true professional. Duck also did an excellent job supervising from the consultation table and making sure everyone was sticking to the plan.

Afterwards, we headed home feeling very pleased with ourselves and ready for a relaxing afternoon.

A big thank you to everyone at Roundwood Vets for taking such good care of me.

☀️🐱 Hot weather? Don't forget about your cats!

While many cats love lounging in the sunshine, it's important to help them stay cool when temperatures rise.

💧 Provide plenty of fresh water
❄️ Try a frozen Lick-e-Lix on a lick mat
🧊 Offer cooling mats or cool ceramic/marble tiles
🏡 Create shaded, well-ventilated resting spots
🪮 Brush regularly to remove excess fur

⚠️ Watch for signs of heatstroke, including panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting or difficulty breathing. If you're concerned, contact your vet immediately.
