Unfortunately, it’s that time of year again – grass dart season. 🌾🐾
While they may look harmless, grass darts (grass seeds) can pose a serious risk to our dogs. Their sharp, arrow-like shape allows them to attach to fur and pe*****te the skin, ears, eyes, nose, paws and even migrate internally, causing painful infections and potentially life-threatening complications.
Grass darts can lead to:
• Painful abscesses and skin infections
• Ear infections and damage to the ear canal
• Eye injuries and corneal ulcers
• Sneezing, coughing and nasal infections
• Lameness caused by seeds becoming lodged between the toes
• Internal damage requiring advanced treatment or surgery
Common signs to watch for include excessive licking, head shaking, limping, swelling, sneezing, discharge from the eyes or ears, and sudden signs of discomfort.
Prevention is key. After every walk, especially through long or dry grass, take a few moments to check your dog's paws, ears, eyes and coat. Early detection can make all the difference.
If you notice any of these signs, seek veterinary advice promptly. A tiny grass dart can quickly become a big problem.
