I've been keeping busy despite the silence on socials!

Following on from achieving my level 4, I've started the assessment process for APDT ATI!

I also start my university course in September, which is exciting. The journey towards CAB will officially begin.

Last week I had the most incredible opportunity; I attended a 5 day residential field trip to Cyprus with The DoGenius Institute and a small group of fellow students.

It was absolutely amazing (if a bit emotional at times), I visited different pounds and rescues, met some amazing dogs and people alike, and made some wonderful new friends. The beach trips and cocktail debriefs were also pretty good ๐Ÿ˜‰.

I also made some lovely cat friends, a beautiful black and white boy we named Jasper - he'd come to our home each morning for his daily ham tribute - and a lovely black cat that would greet us everyday on our way home from dinner, we named him Salem.

In light of recent events I feel itโ€™s important to be transparent and open with my opinions on Breed Specific Legislation.

If anyone is looking for support and advice for their XL Bully, then please do reach out; I have been working with those in my local community to support with muzzling and preparation.

I've been a bit quiet on the socials, but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy! Still studying, still working.

Here's the beautiful Olive working with her human and offering check ins. Olive struggles with frustration on lead when seeing other dogs, so we are working on her remaining calm and offering alternatives instead. We saw a few doggies on our walk recently and she did amazingly!

I've been a bit quiet the last few weeks, I've been busy with a few different bits, including studying towards more qualifications. I just wanted to share our first review ๐Ÿฅฐ. I love supporting dog parents to feel more equipped to deal with training hiccups!

This is Jesse, I'm yet to meet her but I have been working with her dedicated person to help with some of her troubles!

Jesse struggles with sound sensitivity, is nervous around dogs, and dislikes formal handling.

We've seen some steady progress from her, and her person is continuing to work hard. Discussions have also been had with the Vet, as during our consultation there was a lot of evidence to indicate potential underlying pain. The Vet believes Jesse may have something going on with her cruciate ligament, so she is going to have this investigated further.

5 tips to improve your recall!

๐Ÿพ Use tasty treats! Include variety and vary how you deliver the treats. The more your dog loves the treats you use, the more successful your training will be.

๐Ÿพ Engage your dog with training and play. If you engage more with your dog on walks (more than endlessly throwing balls!) then your dog will be more switched on to your presence and be more responsive. If we don't engage with our dogs they get used to not checking in with us.

๐Ÿพ Avoid using recall only to end fun off-lead time. If we incorporate recall throughout our walks then our dogs won't associate coming back to us with fun ending.

๐Ÿพ Recall to fun tricks adds engagement and variety to recall, keeping it interesting for your dog.

๐Ÿพ Avoid using your dog's name as a recall cue. Our dogs hear their names multiple times a day in different contexts and so may not always respond. By having a set word, you can condition that word only to recall.

There are a lot of different reasons for your dog's behaviour, intentional vindictiveness or naughtiness isn't one of them.

All behaviours have a function. They serve the individual in some way. Behaviours are the observable actions of any number of underlying environmental and internal processes. Assumptions are not only unhelpful, they are potentially damaging and neglect to address your dogs' reality.

Step back and take a moment to observe what your dog is telling you. If you need help, reach out to a certified and qualified professional.
