Today is Check the Chip Day.

Not the most exciting date in the calendar, admittedly.

Your dog is unlikely to have bought you a card.

But it is a useful reminder to check that your pet's microchip details are actually up to date.

Because a microchip containing your old address and the mobile number you had three phones ago isn't going to be nearly as helpful as you hoped.

If you've moved house or changed your phone number, take a few minutes today to check the details held on your pet's microchip database and update them if necessary.

And if you're planning to travel abroad with your dog, cat or ferret, their microchip becomes even more important. It's part of the pet travel requirements and needs to tie in correctly with their travel documentation and other preparations.

So today's glamorous pet-care jobs:

Check the chip.

Check the contact details.

And, if you're planning a trip together, check the current requirements for where you're going.

Your pet may not appreciate the admin.

But if they ever go wandering or you fancy a little travel with your dog, you'll be very glad you did it.

This is Quantum — a German Shepherd who spent six years with Nottinghamshire Police, helping secure over 250 arrests and taking violent offenders off the streets.

He was stabbed tackling a machete‑wielding suspect. He was hit over the head with a plank of wood while detaining another violent offender. And every time, he got back up and carried on doing the job he was trained to do.

Loyal. Fearless. Dependable.

Now retired, Quantum is suffering with a broken tooth linked to his service, plus painful joint and mobility issues. His vet care has already reached around £10,000, with charities stepping in to help.

And here’s what many people don’t realise:

When a police dog retires, their vet bills become the responsibility of their new owner or former handler — even when the injuries are a direct result of years spent protecting the public.

These dogs didn’t choose danger. They served because we asked them to.
Surely their support shouldn’t end the moment their working life does.

A petition is calling on the UK Government to provide lifelong veterinary care and financial support for retired service animals — including police dogs, military dogs, and police horses.

They gave us everything. They deserve dignity, care, and protection for the rest of their lives.
