New puppies second session all about socialising !!! set up ready to go

01/08/2026

In our puppy courses we focus on life skills!

We do a lot of work on puppies being able to work around each other without interacting but today we also practiced a ‘go and say hi’ scenario

And the bigger challenge of course practicing ending an interaction!

Meet Sam from Feeding Canine Behaviour!

If you are lucky enough, like us, to have a Canine Nutritionist as a friend, you know how extremely valuable they are! Sam has been at the end of a message when some of our dogs have had ongoing gut issues, and we are ever so grateful!

We wanted to share a snapshot of the useful knowledge Sam has with our PerfectFit community, so here are some bowl boosters you can add to your dog's food, no matter what you are feeding; these superfoods will do wonders!

Give Sam a follow for more information on your dog's gut health and their microbiome.

What's your experience with dog gut health?

The problem with the word socialisation when we talk about socialising our puppies is the connotations this word has.
It means ‘taking part in social activities, mixing with others’

That’s why a lot of new owners think that socialising their puppy means they have to make sure their puppy interacts with lots of other dogs, as well as people.

What we actually mean when we talk about socialisation in puppies is gradually and appropriately exposing a puppy or dog to new people, animals, environments, sights, sounds, and smells. It is not about forcing interactions with everything or everyone, but rather teaching them to remain calm and neutral in potentially busy environments.

That’s what our new puppy recruits started with this week! Being around others whilst investigating new items and smells so dogs and people just become part of the environment

Every dog and owner is different and there are so many different aspects and intricacies when it comes to unpicking and successfully working with reactive dogs so each recipe is unique.

The first ingredient is always the same though, focus between dog and owner

I have recently started working with this lovely young rescue dog who struggles around strangers. During the session he really relaxed around me and this pair is off to a flying start!

Unlike behaviours like ‘sit’ where we often quite quickly get to a point where the behaviour is good and ‘finished’ as such, recall is a process.

Most of us start teaching this to our puppies, during adolescence it can often become (a lot) less reliable.

But it’s never ‘finished’. It’s like a mobile phone battery, you need to keep charging it for it to keep working.

And it’s so much more than giving your dog a treat when they come back!
For recall we need to build drive, enthusiasm for the behaviour more than anything.

And it starts with a super strong connection to a whistle or recall word.
This morning my dogs and I did some practice out of sight
