Lovely session with Luna this week; we worked on loose lead walking as she can get very frustrated if she isn’t able to meet other dogs.

Following previous trainer’s advice she was often just corrected for pulling which only added to her frustration levels.

So we started with what loose lead walking is really about, focus! When focused on us, our dogs will automatically match our walking pace. On or off lead as you can see!

We introduced some nice little touches to start building drive and motivation in Luna so she REALLY wants to walk close to her owner.

Next step in the plan, distractions! And using interaction with other dogs as rewards for engagement with her owner!

Apprehension and anticipation can look very similar in dogs — both create high arousal, raise adrenaline, faster breathing, inability to settle and intense focus.

Whether your dog experiences a situation with apprehension or with anticipation depends how the brain interprets what’s going on!

Apprehension = the dog is uncertain and the situation is perceived as a potential threat

Your dog may hesitate, scan the environment, bark, freeze, or struggle to think clearly because their brain is preparing to avoid danger.

Anticipation = the dog feels excited and expects a potential reward

The same physical arousal is present, but the brain interprets it in a positive way— creating motivation, confidence, and eager behaviour.

This is why “excited” and “anxious” dogs can sometimes look so similar on the outside.

Examples of ANTICIPATION

• Watching you prepare dinner
• Getting excited before agility or ball play
These dogs are generally moving towards something rewarding.

Examples of APPREHENSION:

• Hearing fireworks
• Seeing another dog after a bad experience
•Waiting at the vet clinic

Lily the Labrador is generally quite worried around other dogs as well as road noises etc. She has had some stressful encounters with other dogs and the road she lives on is a busy road.
In the first part of the video we are walking along the road, she is apprehensive. In the second part we are on a nearby field where she is anticipating off lead time, treats and play!

Big congratulations to this lot!

Well done for showing up and putting in the work, it shows! We have worked on engagement in lots of different ways, lead skills, recall and life skills so you are now well equipped for the next step: adolescence 🙈

Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing you soon!

Our new beginners group started this week. Small groups and two trainers means a lot of individual attention and quicker progress.

These guys are off to a great start!

Nice little session this week with the lovely Luna. She is a foreign rescue and that means she wasn’t very familiar with strangers and other dogs. Her owners have been putting in a lot of work and this week we went somewhere public.

Luna just processed. She didn’t freeze or pull away, she just took it in. We have worked a lot on recovery, building resilience around smaller stressors.

Stress is part of life, but recovery is the key.
