Many of the plants we happily grow in our gardens have developed toxins to protect themselves from being eaten. Those same toxins can affect our pets too. Some plants cause little more than an upset stomach, while others can affect the heart, kidneys or nervous system. In some cases, even small amou...

Thinking about registering your cat as a blood donor but wondering what actually happens at a donation appointment? 🩸

Let's walk you through it 👇

✅ Before your appointment
Follow your cat’s normal routine for mealtimes and exercise on donation day, making sure they have access to fresh water before your appointment.

👋 Arriving at the session
Our lovely team will welcome you and settle your cat into their own calm, private donation room. They'll then have plenty of time to explore and relax!

🩺 Health check
Your cat will receive a full free health check from our vet, including an annual heart scan. We shave two small areas and apply numbing cream to prevent any discomfort.

🩸 Donation
Your cat will donate either by sitting or lying down, whichever they feel most comfortable with. The donation itself takes just a few minutes, and we collect 6.6ml of blood per kg of bodyweight.

🍪 Tea and biscuits
The moment donation is done, your cat gets their ‘tea and biscuits’, which is some food and a drink. We’ll take your cat’s photo for our page to celebrate them as a lifesaver and give you a goody bag to take home.

🏡 Aftercare
Your cat should take it nice and easy for the rest of the day, avoiding any strenuous exercise, and staying indoors to relax. They can return to their normal routine and activities the day after donating.

🌟 Star Patient!

Say hello to Lulu, our tiny chihuahua patient who recently came in for her dental treatment.

Small dogs can become cold very quickly under general anaesthetic, so preventing hypothermia is a key part of their care.

Lulu was kept warm using several evidence‑based methods:

• A jumper to help retain body heat
• Bubble wrap for extra insulation
• Blankets throughout her stay

These warming techniques help maintain safe body temperature, support circulation, and promote smoother recovery — and Lulu handled her procedure brilliantly.

♥️ The whole team wish Lulu a speedy recovery!
