!!TW: DISCUSSION OF SEIZURES!!
🔥🥵 HEAT STROKE IN DOGS🥵🔥
Just wanted to share this……
I’m sure we are all extremely grateful that we have fab weather this Bank Holiday weekend, but this evening has reminded me how we need to monitor our dogs even more closely in these temperatures.
My dogs have spent most of today indoors, except for the odd wander into the garden.
This evening, my son noticed that my poodle Boo, was acting strangely; wobbly on her legs, and stumbling slightly.
She found her place on the sofa and within 30 seconds had begun to have a seizure.
She was extremely hot to the touch.
Keeping calm and reassuring her, I took her into my groom room, which was cool due to air conditioning. She then had 3 further, quick episodes of going in and out of a seizure.
Thankfully with my first aid training, I knew I had to get her temperature down.
When the seizures stopped, I put her in the bath and working from her feet up, gently showered her in barely warm water, to cool her….I towel dried her off and we stayed in my groom room for another 15mins until she was cooler.
Thankfully, she recovered fairly quickly and had some water.
I am so grateful for my first aid training 🙏🏼
I suppose what I’m saying is….your dog doesn’t need to always ‘sit’ in the sun for heatstroke to affect them. The fact that this heatwave has hit at such speed is enough to affect our dogs.
I will be contacting my vet tomorrow, as although Boo is ok now, seizures can sometimes cause internal damage too.
With that in mind, it’s important to remember…
Heat stroke signs to look for:
Excessive panting
Drooling
Restlessness
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Noisy breathing
Stumbling
Disorientation
Seizures
Loss of consciousness
Things you can do to help:
STAY CALM
Move your dog to somewhere safe and cool
Cool them with wet towels or room temperature water (NEVER COLD WATER as this can shock them)
If you can, position them near a fan to help with cooling.
Offer water
Consult your vet
I apologise if this has affected/scared anyone, but thought I’d share for educational reasons 🙏🏼
