Always remember…

A dog’s behaviour isn’t just about what you can see.

Behaviour is influenced by three key factors:

🧠 Meaning – The dog’s conditioned emotional response. How do they feel about the situation? Excited? Worried? Frustrated? Safe?

🏆 Consequences – What has happened after the behaviour in the past? Has the behaviour been reinforced or punished?

🎯 Skills – Does the dog have the concepts and skills needed to cope successfully in that situation?

When we understand these three areas, we stop asking:

“How do I stop this behaviour?”

And start asking:

“Why is this behaviour happening?”

That’s where effective behaviour change begins.

Because if we change the meaning, teach the skills, and manage the consequences, the behaviour often changes naturally.

Are you struggling with a nervous, reactive dog?

Meet Rocky 💙

Rocky was one of the most nervous and hyper-vigilant dogs I’ve ever worked with. Unfortunately, his previous trainer tried to punish the fear out of him, which only made things worse.

Instead of focusing on suppressing his behaviour, we focused on building his confidence.

Through fun, reward-based games, we developed key concepts such as optimism, resilience, and disengagement from triggers.

The transformation has been incredible. Rocky can now notice trigger after trigger without feeling the need to overreact. He’s calmer, more confident, and much better equipped to navigate the world around him.

I’d rather have a showery day than a beautiful sunny one when I’m teaching dogs. There are fewer distractions around, so the dogs have fewer questions to ask and fewer opportunities to get things wrong. It makes learning much easier for them.

Let’s talk about coping strategies for reactive dogs! 💙

Wouldn’t it be amazing if, whenever there was ambiguity or novelty in the environment, your dog noticed something exciting or scary — a movement or noise that disturbed them — and instead of overreacting, they used a more empowering coping strategy?

So, how do we achieve this?

By teaching games like Noise Box!

In the video, Chance is faced with an ambiguous box full of novelty and noise. Look at how he’s able to calmly disengage, engage his seeking system, and power himself up (two feet)! 💙
