And none of us could be wrong.

Lots of people within this industry struggle to collaborate and come together, taking differences of opinion or techniques as personal criticism or a different approach as ammunition to break someone down.

Dog training is nuanced, with so many varying factors that can change how we might approach a problem that just because a dog trainer came up with a different way of doing it to you, doesn’t mean they are wrong.

When the dog is happy, fulfilled and understands what is happening and the owner feels the same, the results will speak for themselves.

If you’re finding yourself comparing your training to others, reach out and have a chat to find out if there is something you’re missing.

If you’re finding yourself criticising others work based on short clips online, reach out to a therapist to find out what insecurities you haven’t dealt with.

If you’re finding yourself isolated and stuck, put yourself into new workshops and remind yourself you are always learning, you’re never done and you don’t know everything.

This year I have been very fortunate to surround myself with some absolutely incredible trainers and I’m forever grateful for that and whilst it feels scary to put yourself out there in front of other professionals, it is worth the heart in throat moments, because on the other side of that might be some new ways of thinking and working and maybe even a new friend.

Abuse under the guise of balanced dog training is not training.

I actually understand why some trainers hate balanced dog trainers, if that’s what you think we all do, I get it. I wouldn’t want to associate with people that think an e collar should be used to correct a dog into submission, or a sport scene that refuses to acknowledge blatant abuse in the name of building strong dogs, or the silence allowing people who do horrible things to others to continue because it’s easier to be quiet.

I don’t want to be associated with that either.

Over the next few months, my team and I will be running free events with the aim to build a true balanced training community in Hull, something that is seriously missing in our little corner of the UK. Not compulsion labelled as respect, not yank and crank labelled as firm but fair, not human comfort over dogs feelings.

When we reopen for mentees in August, I have made a big decision to exclusively work with women.

This is not a sexism issue, this is not adding to a divide, this is not fueling the masculinity epidemic, this is about providing support to women within this industry that are juggling all the plates.

Women are incredible, yet they question themselves.
Women are incredible, yet they struggle to take up space.
Women are incredible, yet they hold back in fear of failure.

If this is you, you’ve found the corner of instagram that wants to see you shine.

Until you’ve built a business in one hand and kept everything else going in the other you will not appreciate the blood sweat and tears I see women pour into their businesses and I want to make sure they know they can, and they will succeed.

Let them sleep in my bedroom.

So many owners make the mistake of forgetting they’re taking a social creature away from their mums and littermates and expect them to instantly settle alone in a box in their kitchen. I love crate training, but not like that and I believe it’s one of the big reasons I meet so many clients that struggle with separation issues.

“They cried the first night for 15 minutes then they were fine”

The fine? A puppies nervous system in distress, a foundation built on fear and worry and a young animal that doesn’t know how to communicate with its new owners.

Just because they stopped crying when you go to bed, doesn’t mean they’re fine. If they find being away from you in the day hard, if they howl for 5 minutes every time you leave the house, or do things like “excited” wees, they’re not fine.

Your dog’s ability to tolerate stress will rely on having a strong attachment to their caregivers and starting this based on leaving them alone to cry isn’t going to give your puppy the best start in life.

Once your puppy is safe and content being away from you during the day, that’s when they’re ready to be away from you overnight.

I was chatting to a client and I realised there is a huge gap in the market for puppies to learn from adult dogs.

As a dog trainer, I often meet frustrated dogs that are lacking in appropriate social skills, typically having learnt play skills from other puppies at group classes or on lead greetings on pavement walks, both of which make me pull a face.

But it’s not your fault, because the thing that should exist to help your puppies, doesn’t exist! So I decided to make it.

You know the kind, often used to try and scrape royal canin diarrhoea off the pavement 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

If you understand positive punishment and negative reinforcement, you will understand how s**t for the dog it is to attach a lead that’s designed to get longer when you pull into it, to a tool that’s designed to contract around their face to discourage pulling.

This one really bugs me, it would never cross my mind to charge more to keep an owner informed of what their dog is up to every day 😩

And puppies need help to navigate life, the school run is fast paced, overwhelming, full of grabby hands and overstimulation for the puppy. When your dog is trained, by all means kill two birds with one stone and walk the kids and the dog, but until then, you’re probably creating more problems than you’re ready to fix.
