Working breeds need to use their brains and innate natural instincts to be fulfilled. If you only ever use physical exercise you will create fit lunatics that require more and more exercise.

If you use breed specific training and exercise and incorporate this into your dogs day the result will be a more relaxed and fulfilled companion.

Dogs pulling on their leads can be a real cause for frustration

-Tension - if we allow our dogs to continue forwards with tension we inadvertently reinforce this is how we move forward to our dogs... forward motion needs to happen with no tension.

-Build a reward history - heelwork isn't inherently rewarding to our dogs so use verbal praise and treats to reinforce when your dog is in the correct position

- Consistency- there is no point trying super hard to crack loose lead walking one day then letting your dog pull the next day. Being consistent conveys a clear and fair message to our dogs with no grey areas.

There are lots more points but too many for a post so don't struggle alone, get in touch to find out how we can help achieve more harmonious walks. 😊

We have recently been asked if we do classes for dogs with reactivity or neutrality classes/walks.

The answer is no as we strongly believe that getting multiple dogs with reactivity issues together is not helpful to the dogs or their owners. When you already have a dog that is stressed or overly excited in the presence of other dogs, placing them in a situation with other dogs experiencing similar issues is not going to help.

We work successfully with reactivity on a 121 basis and where necessary use our dogs as stooge dogs to help support the owners in their journey, but this is only when they have strategies in place of how to manage situations. Many of these dogs then go on to participate in our group classes such as gundog or life skills.

So if you are struggling we a reactive dog, don't struggle in silence and get in touch.

"I can't stop my dog pulling, I've tried everything!"

Does this sound familiar? If it does carry on reading...

Heelwork or loose lead walking whatever you want to call it isn't naturally rewarding for our dogs so we have to put the effort in.

Consistency is the key to your dog understanding walking nicely on the lead. If we give up every other day and allow our dogs to drag us to the park then we reset the consistency clock....this is confusing for our dogs and leaves them in limbo where they do what works for them. Generally what works for them is getting to where they want to go as quickly as possible.

It not about the tool you use to walk your dog but sometimes changing a tool will help with a persistent puller to reset and start a fresh with new boundaries.

We need to build a reward history for the behaviour in varying degrees of distractions. In short this means you need to make being on a loose lead rewarding for the dog and each dog will be different with what it values. You need to build up the behaviour in low distraction areas first before expecting the same behaviour in high distraction areas otherwise you are just setting your dogs up to fail.

Quite often the dogs we see with poor lead skills are often lacking in self control in many other situations so it is important to look holistically at the dogs behaviour otherwise you will hit a brick wall
