Today I’d like to share some news. Nicci will be stepping away from Whistle and Wag to embark on new adventures and spend some well deserved time with her family.

I want to say a heartfelt thank you to Nicci for starting Whistle and Wag with me and for all the care, knowledge and support she has given to so many dogs and their owners. Her contribution has helped shape the business into what we are today. Personal thanks to Nicci for putting up with my scattered unorganised self and always being able to laugh about it.

We will miss having her as part of the team day to day, but we wish her every happiness in this next chapter. We hope she’ll pop back from time to time for guest appearances – it certainly won’t be the same without her!

THANK YOU NICCI 🥰

Who can relate? haha

So many client say "he's never like this when you're not here" or "can we buy a cardboard cutout of you to stick in the corner"

As much as I'd like to think I have a magic effect on your dogs, its generally because you act differently when I'm around, whether its you're more relaxed or notice things sooner as I'm that little voice in your ear, its all you!

My job is to train you, not your dog and you will get there I promise.

But I fully believe you when you tell me the angelic dog I'm looking at isn't normally like this... haha

We help so many people build better relationships with there dogs but every so often a dog, their owners and their journey stand out.

Meet Ailsa, a fun loving cocker spaniel.

I first met Ailsa's owners when they pounced on me in a farm shop car park. (ok they didn't pounce, but they were desperate for help)
Ailsa was a gorgeous loving little dog but as soon as they took her outside she turned into a hunting obsessed gremlin (sound familiar spaniel owners?) Ailsa's owners loved her but there were many times that they didn't really like her.

We set about building a better relationship between Ailsa and her owners and put in place some training to use to build engagement.
They worked super hard and now have the adventure companion they always dreamed of, who is engaged, listens to commands and most importantly wants to be with them when out and about wherever they are.

You can read Ailsa's story in our blog written by her owner of their journey.

If you can relate to some of the issues Ailsa's owners were struggling with then get in touch and start your journey today.

I’m often asked why I use treats when training gundogs. The answer is simple – they’re one of the most effective ways to build a strong reward history.

Not every dog finds fuss or praise rewarding, especially when they’re focused on a bird, a dummy, or exploring a new environment. For many dogs, food is clear, consistent and easy to understand. It creates a positive association with the behaviour I’m teaching, making it far more likely the dog will choose to repeat it.

That doesn’t mean training is “all about treats”. They’re a tool – just like a whistle or a lead – and their purpose is to help build new behaviours quickly and clearly. Once those behaviours are established, we can start to mix in other rewards your dog finds motivating, whether that’s a retrieve, a run, or a moment of freedom.

For me, it’s not about bribing a dog. It’s about setting them up for success by using rewards they truly value – and for many gundogs, a bit of food is the perfect place to start.

Do you use any treats in your training? tell me below..

What no one tells you about distraction techniques…

Using distraction to stop a behaviour might work in the moment, but it doesn’t actually teach your dog what you want them to do instead. For example, shaking a treat tub when your dog barks at the window might get their attention for a second – but as soon as the distraction is gone, the behaviour usually returns.

True training means helping your dog understand the behaviour that will work for them in that situation. That could mean teaching a calm settle when visitors arrive, or building up their ability to walk past other dogs without reacting.

Distraction can be a useful tool, but on its own, it’s like pressing pause on a problem rather than solving it. By pairing management with clear, consistent training, you help your dog learn skills that stick – without relying on constant intervention.

If you’re unsure how to replace distractions with real learning, I can guide you through practical, positive training steps that get lasting results.
