Not just dogs who get zoomed! πŸ˜πŸ–

🐾 Why Do Dogs Get the Zoomies? πŸ’¨πŸΆ

One minute they're lying peacefully on the sofa. The next, they're racing around the garden at full speed like they've just been launched from a rocket! πŸš€

These bursts of energy are known as FRAPs (Frenetic Random Activity Periods), or as most dog owners know them... the zoomies!

Zoomies are completely normal and are often your dog's way of releasing built-up energy, excitement or even happiness. You might notice them after a bath, following a walk, or when they're especially excited to see you.

A healthy diet also plays an important role in helping your dog enjoy an active lifestyle. High-quality nutrition provides the energy they need for play, exercise and everyday adventures, while balanced ingredients help support healthy muscles, joints and overall wellbeing.

Does your dog get the zoomies? Tell us when they usually strike. We'd love to hear your funniest stories! πŸ‘‡

🐾 Topguard Tuesday Tips

πŸ‘ƒ Your dog experiences the world through their nose.

🐢 Did you know?

While we rely on our eyesight to understand what's happening around us, your dog's nose does most of the work.

In fact, a dog's sense of smell is estimated to be up to 100,000 times more powerful than ours. Every lamp post, blade of grass and tree holds a story. They're discovering which dogs have walked that route, what wildlife has visited, who's been nearby and even picking up changes in the environment that we simply can't detect.

So, the next time your dog stops every few steps to sniff, they're not being stubborn or distracted. They're doing what comes naturally.

Allowing your dog time to sniff during their walk isn't just enjoyable for them. It provides valuable mental stimulation, helps reduce boredom, builds confidence and can leave them feeling more relaxed and fulfilled than a brisk walk alone.

🦌🐟 What are Novel Protein Diets... and could they help your dog?

If your dog struggles with itchy skin, recurring ear infections, digestive upset or suspected food sensitivities, the protein in their food could be part of the problem.

That's where novel proteins come in.

A novel protein is simply a protein source your dog is unlikely to have eaten before. Because the immune system hasn't been repeatedly exposed to it, it's often less likely to trigger a food-related allergic reaction or sensitivity.

Some examples include:

🦌 Venison
πŸ¦† Duck
πŸ‡ Rabbit
🦬 Buffalo
πŸ– Pork
🐟 Selected fish species

Many dogs with food intolerances do well on a carefully chosen novel protein diet, especially when they've been eating the same protein, such as chicken or beef.

What are the benefits of feeding novelty proteins?

βœ”οΈ May help reduce itchy skin and scratching
βœ”οΈ Can support dogs with food sensitivities
βœ”οΈ May improve digestion and stool quality
βœ”οΈ Can help reduce recurring ear and skin problems linked to diet
βœ”οΈ Provides high-quality protein while adding variety to your dog's nutrition

It's important to remember that not every itchy dog has a food allergy. Environmental allergies, parasites and other health conditions can cause similar symptoms, so always speak to your vet if you're concerned.

We understand that every dog is different. That's why we offer a range of carefully formulated recipes using quality protein sources to help owners find the right nutrition for their dog's individual needs.

After all, the best diet isn't the same for every dog, it's the one that helps your dog feel and look their best. 🐢❀️

🚨🐢 Why are we still seeing dogs and other pets suffer in hot weather?

Every summer, the same heartbreaking stories emerge. Dogs left in hot cars. Pets walked during the hottest part of the day. Animals collapsing from heatstroke.

The question is...

Is there really not enough information out there? Or are too many people still underestimating just how quickly heat can become fatal?

The facts are sobering.

πŸ’” According to PETA, 151 companion animals died from heat-related causes in 2025, while 365 more were rescued. These are only the reported casesβ€”the true number is likely much higher.

The RSPCA also warns that a parked car can reach around 47Β°C within an hour when it's just 22Β°C outside, even if it's parked in the shade or the windows are left open.

If you ever see a dog showing signs of heatstroke in a parked car, call 999 immediately. If the dog isn't yet in distress, try to locate the owner, stay with the animal, and continue to monitor the situation. The RSPCA has clear guidance on what to do and when emergency action is needed.

These tragedies are preventable.

🐾 Leave pets at home if you can't take them somewhere cool.
🐾 Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening.
🐾 Check the pavement before every walk.
🐾 Never leave an animal in a parked vehicle, not even "for five minutes."

πŸ™ Please share this post.

If it reaches just one person who changes their plans, delays a walk, or decides not to leave their dog in the car, it could spare an animal from unnecessary suffering, or even save a life.

Together, we can make sure fewer pets become another heartbreaking statistic.

🐢🐱 Functional additives - what are they?

These are carefully selected ingredients that do much more than provide basic nutrition. They help support your dog's or cat's health from the inside out, so they can enjoy a happier, healthier and more active life.

Including:

🦠 Probiotics & Prebiotics
Support a healthy gut microbiome, improve digestion, aid nutrient absorption and can even help strengthen the immune system.

🐟 Omega-3 & Omega-6 Fatty Acids
Help maintain healthy skin, a glossy coat, support brain function, reduce inflammation and promote joint health.

🦴 Joint Support Ingredients
Ingredients such as glucosamine and chondroitin help support healthy cartilage and mobility, especially in older or active dogs.

🌿 Natural Botanicals
Selected herbs and plant extracts can provide natural antioxidants that help support the immune system and overall wellbeing.

πŸ’ͺ Adaptogens
Which are natural plant compounds that may help the body respond to physical and environmental stress while supporting overall health.

At Topguard Feeds, we believe great nutrition goes beyond simply filling a bowl.

Many of our recipes across the Classic, Elite and Superior ranges include carefully chosen functional ingredients to support digestion, skin and coat condition, joint mobility, immunity and overall wellbeing, without compromising on quality or taste.

Because when your pet receives the right nutrition every day, you'll often see the difference in:
✨ Healthier skin and shinier coats
✨ Better digestion and firmer stools
✨ healthier joints and improved mobility
✨ Increased vitality and energy
✨ Happy tails and clean bowls!

Every ingredient has a purpose, and every bowl is an opportunity to support your pet's long-term health.

🌞🐢 Another HOT week is on the way... Is your pet ready? 🐱🌑️

The UK might not be known for extreme heat, but for our dogs and cats, temperatures can become dangerous very quickly.

Unlike us, dogs can't cool themselves by sweating. They rely mainly on panting, which becomes much less effective in hot, humid weather. Cats are generally better at finding shade, but they can still suffer from heat exhaustion and heatstroke too.

🚨 Know the signs of heatstroke:

🐾 Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
🐾 Drooling more than usual
🐾 Bright red or pale gums
🐾 Lethargy or weakness
🐾 Vomiting or diarrhoea
🐾 Confusion or staggering
🐾 Collapse or seizures (an emergency)

If you notice these symptoms, move your pet somewhere cool immediately, offer small amounts of water, cool them gradually with cool (not ice-cold) water, and contact your vet straight away.

πŸ• Walking your dog? Follow these simple rules:

β˜€οΈ Walk early in the morning or later in the evening.
🌳 Stick to shaded routes where possible.
🚫 Skip the walk altogether if it's simply too hot, missing one walk is far safer than risking heatstroke.
🐾 Test the pavement with the back of your hand. If you can't comfortably hold it there for 7 seconds, it's too hot for your dog's paws.
πŸ’§ Always carry fresh drinking water.

🏑 At home:

βœ… Keep fresh water available at all times.
βœ… Close curtains during the hottest part of the day.
βœ… Provide cool mats, damp towels or tiled floors to lie on.
βœ… Never leave pets in a parked cat, even with windows open. Temperatures can become fatal within minutes.

🐱 Don't forget your cats!

Provide multiple bowls of fresh water around the house and garden, keep them indoors during the hottest part of the day if possible, and make sure they always have access to cool, shaded places.

❀️ Remember that heatstroke can develop in minutes but is almost entirely preventable.

Share this post to help keep more pets safe during the warm weather. Every share could save a life. 🐾

Let's hope people are being sensible.

Let's hope people are being sensible.

With a red weather warning for heat in place across England and Wales, we're urging dog owners to put their pooches into a temporary 'dog lockdown' for the next 48 hours ⚠️

Temperatures could reach around 39Β°C on Wednesday and Thursday, so now is the time to change routines and protect dogs from the extreme heat.

Our experts recommend keeping dogs indoors as much as possible and avoiding walks, fetch, ball games and other energetic exercise.

Missing a few walks is far safer than risking heatstroke. Please help us keep dogs safe and share to raise awareness πŸ”ƒ
