Day 1 for my own personal passive detection dog Sasha. Rack introduction using tennis balls. Off lead, no handler interference, just pure natural dog willingness. Short and sweet! It’s great to get started with her!!

It is with great sadness to hear of the passing of James Mcghie. A true gent and an absolute giant of a man and even larger character. James was a truly dedicated dog handler that had every potential to go further in his detection dog handling career.

I first met James back in 2022 when he attended his proactive drug course and then returning to complete his passive drug course late 2024. From then he started his role with Inter K9 supporting police authorities conduct street and bar patrols with a high success rate. James loved these unique operations. I think it took him back to his military days. He would ring me up and tell me how the job went and talk about how much fun it was. From there I offered him a full time drug detection role on the port terminal. James would go above and beyond as an employee for Inter K9 and always looked the smartest of dog handlers with perfectly polished boots and a gleaming uniform and immaculate van which would stem from his army days which he also loved to talk about, a lot, which made our friendship a lot closer with our same dry sense of humor, banter and deep conversations.
The last day I saw James he was training with me with his new upcoming security dog. James was keen to keep the training consistent with Sheba as she was progressing nicely and he would always keep his training consistent with drug dog Belle. James was never afraid to ask questions whether it was work related or family related or ask how you were and passing his regards on to my other half and son.
I want to pass on my warmest regards to his wife, daughter and grandchildren. A true loss for you all. James would always speak of you and was a proud family man.
He will truly be missed as a friend and employee.
Rest in Peace James. I’ll see you at the RV.

So, I wanted to post what really happened in the unedited version. In the original video that I showed of the dog being marked for the indication and returning back to her handler. Looked great! And that’s my point, it looked great…..

However, It’s very easy to manipulate the power of social media when promoting a video clip. You don’t see the truth on social media most of the time when it comes to dog training videos. You see what the editor wants you to see.
There’s nothing wrong with making a blooper, error, a simple mistake or a great looking video. It’s dog training 🤷‍♂️
This video can mean many different things pending on the discipline of the dog. For example, it’s EDD, so the dog recalling to an unsearched area by mistake and possibly becoming lost, panicking or setting off a secondary device etc isn’t the result that we want so what can we do differently to prevent this from happening again, simple, don’t allow the dog to range too far from the handler would be the simple solution pending on the venue, terrain etc that isn’t in your favour.

Anyway, purpose of this video is don’t believe or trust everything that you see on social media. Enjoy 😉
