Our Golden Pheasant, Donald, has been strutting his stuff this week, flashing his feathers and trying his best to impress the ladies.

And yes… he’s called Donald just because of the hair. We're not drawing any other parallels here...👀

🌿✨ Out in the wild for conservation! ✨🌿

Today our team headed to our adopted stretch of the River Ouse in York to carry out the annual Tansy Beetle population survey 💚. These rare, jewel-green beetles are only found mainly here in York, and our surveys help monitor their numbers and support ongoing conservation efforts.

We’re proud to play our part in protecting this dazzling little species and their riverside habitat. 🌊🌱

Just some of the amazing animals you could meet this weekend at Bugtopia Hornsea Zoo!

🐓 Golden Pheasants – dressed in gold and crimson like they’ve just won “Best Dressed” at nature’s fashion awards. Expect dramatic strutting.

🦜 Blue and Gold & Green Winged Macaws – proof that you can wear every colour all at once....just wing it!

🦎 Turquoise dwarf gecko – fun-sized, lightning quick, and always photogenic.

🦎 Iguana – the undisputed champion of relaxing in style, preferably somewhere sunny.

🐢 Chinese softshell turtle – streamlined, slick, and built for a smooth getaway if needed.

🐸 Cane toad – equal parts grumpy and charismatic, with a hop that demands respect.

🐢 Red-foot tortoises – stylish shells, snazzy ankles, and a “slow and steady” charm you can’t help but love.

🐾 Asian Palm Civet – sleek, whiskered, and carrying an air of mystery wherever he goes.

📅 This weekend: feathers, scales, shells, and a whole lot of character.

From the majestic Green Iguana to the jewel-bright and Critically Endangered Turquoise Dwarf Geckos, our zoo is home to a dazzling variety of lizards from across the globe.

World Lizard Day is all about celebrating these incredible reptiles, raising awareness of their importance in healthy ecosystems, and highlighting the conservation work needed to protect them. Many lizard species face threats from habitat loss, climate change, and the illegal pet trade but together, we can help secure their future.
