Sadly our old pony Badger has passed away . He was a long time favourite at Putley for many years . Lots of children learned to ride on Badger and a favourite on pony days. Such a character!
He retired a few years ago and has had a lovely life with his retirement family.

The Equestrian Business Awards in association with Equinnect - Riding School of the Year

Great riding schools don’t all look the same. Some are busy centres with full calendars, others are small, independent yards, family-run schools, or even one-person operations quietly doing brilliant work day in, day out.

This award is about recognising those riding schools and instructors who put horses first, create safe and supportive environments, which goes beyond riding, and help riders of all ages and abilities grow in confidence, both in and out of the saddle.

If you know a riding school that deserves recognition, whether it’s where you learned to ride, somewhere that supports grassroots riders, or a small yard making a big impact, we’d love to hear about them.
Nominations are open for Riding School of the Year, in association with Equinnect, and they’re open to riding schools of all sizes.

👉 Please share this post, tag your riding school in the comments and nominate a school you believe truly stands out via our website.

🐴❄️ HORSE CARE IN THE COLD ❄️🐴

With temperatures dipping below freezing, our vets have put together their top tips to help your horse thrive in these colder temperatures:
1. Check Water Daily
Horses need plenty of fresh water to prevent dehydration and it’s complications such as impaction colic. Ensure any ice is broken regularly, use warm water to top up buckets or even invest in a heated trough/bucket.

2. Increase Forage
Horses stay warm from the inside out! Digestion of hay produces heat, so increasing forage is one of the best ways to help them maintain body temperature.

3. Rug Wisely
There are dangers to over-rugging, but any clipped, older or underweight horses or those with medical issues may benefit from an extra layer. Check underneath rugs daily to assess temperature, and check for rubbing, slipping or dampness.

4. Provide Shelter
Access to a field shelter or natural windbreak such as a hedge line helps protect against wind, rain and snow.

5. Monitor Weight & Condition
Winter can hide weight loss under rugs and fluffy coats and so our vets recommend using touch to assess your horse’s body condition. Remember, horses are designed to lose weight over winter (and gain it over summer!), but if concerned about excessive weight loss, please give our vets a call.

6. Keep Up Gentle Exercise
If conditions are safe, continue regular movement. It supports circulation, digestion and joint comfort. Horses with medical conditions such as osteoarthritis or PSSM will benefit particularly from gentle exercise during the cold months.

Always remember our vets are available for winter health checks, nutritional advice, and support tailored to your horse’s needs.
