One year ago, we made the decision to move Exler Canine from Oxford to Hemel Hempstead.

Leaving behind an established business to start again in a completely new area was a huge leap of faith. Itโ€™s exciting, but if weโ€™re honest, itโ€™s also pretty daunting. You never know how long itโ€™ll take to build trust, meet new people, and establish yourself all over again.

Thankfully, from day one, Hemel welcomed us with open arms, and weโ€™ve been fortunate enough to hit the ground running.

Over the last 12 months weโ€™ve built thriving group classes, worked with countless owners through our 1-2-1 sessions, welcomed dogs onto our Collect & Train and Day Train programmes, and grown an amazing Working Dogs Club.

Most importantly, weโ€™ve had the privilege of meeting some incredible people and helping over 500 dogs in our very first year here. That number still blows us away.

To every single client whoโ€™s trusted us with their dog, shared our name, recommended us to friends and family, or supported us in any way thank you. Youโ€™ve made this first year more successful than we could have imagined.

Hereโ€™s to another year of changing lives, building better relationships between dogs and their owners, and continuing to grow the Exler Canine community.

Working on neutrality and engagement with his handler.

This Norwegian Elkhound has been learning that not every dog needs to be greeted and not every distraction needs a reaction. By building calmness around other dogs and strengthening his focus on his handler, weโ€™re creating a dog thatโ€™s reliable, confident, and easy to live with in the real world.

One of the most overlooked skills in dog training is neutrality.

A well-trained dog isnโ€™t one that has to greet every dog it sees, play with every dog it meets, or constantly seek interaction. A truly balanced dog can remain calm, engaged with its handler, and make good decisions around distractions.

Being able to have dogs off lead around other dogs, while maintaining complete control and reliability, isnโ€™t something that should be expected, itโ€™s something that is earned through consistent training, trust, and clear communication.

In our opinion, thatโ€™s the real flex.

More impressive than sitting outside a coffee shop.
More impressive than walking alone in an empty field.
More impressive than performing rehearsed obedience in a controlled environment.

The real test is whether your dog can function calmly and confidently around other dogs while remaining focused on you.

Our Collect & Train and Day Train programmes. They provide dogs with valuable real world exposure, helping them learn how to coexist, relax, and make good choices around other dogs without feeling the need to engage. The best, most experienced & most skilful in the area for these services.

This is where training becomes practical, functional, and transferable to everyday life.

Developing this level of reliability takes experience, structure, and consistency which is exactly what we pride ourselves on delivering.

We had our first 1-2-1 session with Chillie, a fantastic German Shepherd whoโ€™s at the beginning of her training journey.

Our main focus was on building engagement and establishing the foundations that every well trained dog needs. We introduced marker words, started developing clear communication between dog and handler, and worked on creating a stronger relationship through structured training and positive interactions.

Before we can expect reliability around distractions or advanced obedience, itโ€™s important to build those solid foundations first. Engagement is the key to everything that follows, and Chillie showed some great potential throughout the session. We spent time teaching her that paying attention to her handler is rewarding and that working together can be both fun and fulfilling.

A strong relationship, clear communication, and consistent training are what create confident, reliable dogs, and Chillie has all the ingredients to succeed. It was great to see her enthusiasm for learning and her willingness to get involved from the very start.

This is just the beginning for Chillie, and weโ€™re looking forward to seeing her progress as we continue to build her obedience, focus, and overall confidence.
