Operated by Ponderosa Zoo Ltd. We have multiple outdoor play areas and a Lakeside restaurant. Hot meals can be purchased from the Lakeside Restaurant.

Based in West Yorkshire and home to over 100 animals, Ponderosa Zoo offers a great day out for animal lovers!

✨ Did you know? ✨

The golden mantella (Mantella aurantiaca) is a tiny, brightly coloured frog found nowhere else on Earth but Madagascar! 🐸

This beautiful little amphibian has an extremely restricted range in the eastern rainforests of Madagascar, with populations found in just a handful of areas around Moramanga. 🌿

Sadly, its habitat is under serious pressure from habitat loss and fragmentation, with activities such as agriculture, fires and mining affecting the forests and wetlands it relies on. Disease, including the threat of chytrid fungus, is also a concern for this vulnerable species.

The golden mantella is currently classified as Endangered, highlighting just how important conservation efforts are to protect this tiny frog and its remaining habitat. 💚🐸

✨ Did you know? ✨

Standings’ day geckos have an amazing adaptation on their feet that helps them climb smooth surfaces! 🦎🌿

Their toes are covered in tiny structures called lamellae, which have thousands of microscopic hairs called setae. Each seta branches into even tinier structures called spatulae.

When these spatulae make close contact with a surface, they generate tiny van der Waals forces that work together to create a surprisingly strong dry adhesive effect. Shearing the toes against the surface helps the setae and spatulae engage, allowing geckos to cling to smooth surfaces such as glass.

So, rather than having sticky feet, these little geckos are using microscopic physics to defy gravity! ✨
