Oscar had a 2nd session with me this morning.
We did a quick refresh on the techniques I showed them last week, then back onto counter conditioning and desensitisation when guests leave.
It’s a tricky one as not much is known about his past prior to going to the kill shelter in Romania. We’re making steady progress but everything must be done as Oscar’s own pace so he doesn’t become too stressed and over-stimulated. But I did manage to walk out of the door once and he remained calm.
His mum also mentioned that he doesn’t like to be brushed, so we started desensitising to the brush. Oscar did amazingly 💖

This afternoon I had the pleasure of helping 7 year old Oscar, a Maltese x Bichon Frise (Maltichon) and his new mum.
Oscar was rescued from a kill shelter in Romania and endured a 3 day van journey to a dogs home in Nottingham.
He has now been in his furever home for almost 3 weeks, but he has come with some issues following his ordeal.
Oscar, is afraid of a lot of things: People, especially if they’re on their own. Other dogs. Car journeys and he’s reactive when guests LEAVE the house.
We went through techniques to build his bond and confidence with his Mum which will help them both overcome their fears and anxieties. 💖

I received a photo of Roscoe and Olly after I left them this afternoon.
Both dogs sharing the same space on the chair, relaxed and calm 🥰

This afternoon I went to visit this pair of little monkeys.
Roscoe is a Shih Tzu (one of 4 in the home) and Olly is an 18th month old Dachshund x Jack Russell Terrier.
Olly has become a bit possessive over his toys, especially with Roscoe and his hoomans were worried that this behaviour could lead to injuries.
We went through techniques to teach Ollie not to fear for his loved possession.
There was no arguing or fighting over toys or treats and hopefully now, with practice, they can live in harmony. It was a pleasure to work with them all today 💖

GDV (bloat) in dogs is a time critical, life threatening condition in dogs and so it is important to be able to recognise the signs of bloat in order to seek medical attention from the vet asap.

What causes bloat?

Eating meals too quickly

Eating meals which are too big (especially for those who are fed once a day)

Exercising too soon after (or before) a meal

Stress

Certain breeds*

Overweight or very underweight

Previous family history

Older dogs

* any dog can suffer from bloat, but those most susceptible are larger breeds, especially those with deep chests and can include:

Great Danes
German Shepherds
Weimaraners
Labradors
St Bernard’s

How to prevent bloat?

Spread meals across the day rather than giving 1 large meal.
Try to leave at least one hour between meals and exercise.
If your dog eats quickly, try to give their meals in a slow feeder.
Keep your dog at a healthy weight.
