Yet another amazing insight into the way our horses function and why we must always put their care and welfare first.

Here's an interesting comparison between human and equine anatomy from our friends at Barrow Veterinary Service:

"Did you know that horses are actually walking on the tips of their fingers and toes? 🐎👣

This diagram shows how the horse’s leg bones compare to ours. What looks like a single strong hoof is really the distal phalanx (or coffin bone) – the same bone that makes up the tip of your finger! The long and short pastern bones above it help absorb concussion, while the cannon bone provides strength and support.

Over time, horses evolved to lose most of their “extra toes” (shown in gray on the left). What remains is a highly efficient structure designed for speed, weight-bearing, and shock absorption.

Understanding this anatomy is one reason hoof care and regular farrier/veterinary visits are so important. Any imbalance or injury in these bones can affect the entire limb and your horse’s comfort.

So next time you watch your horse gallop, remember – they’re essentially running on a single finger, protected by a hoof! 💨🐴"

🐎 As we are now heading back to some sort of normality and the summer holidays are coming to an end 😢we are super busy working away behind the scenes to get our term time schedule sorted.
🐎Our Hopoti calendar is up to date and open for bookings for those who had a *regular* riding slot with us before the summer holidays.
🐎For those who were having ad-hoc lessons, please bear with us until we know our schedule before booking in as we have to get our school groups in order before we can assess any additional a availability.
❗️Should anyone need to change, swap or give up their lesson, we would really appreciate a heads up as soon as possible in order to offer it to someone on our waitlist❗️
🙂Thank you as always for your continued support and patience!

"Always be humble, always be understanding and always be kind. The brightest smiles can hide a thousand wounds and people can be fighting inner battles you know absolutely nothing about." - Victoria Wright, Founder and Chair of Riders Minds.

On saturday 9th August we’re asking all equestrians to come together from all walks of life and Ask Care. Talk (A.C.T.) on that day.
Start a conversation on a yard, smile at someone you wouldn’t normally talk to, wear something purple, and for once let us all be united by the same passion. We all have the power to be that leg up that somebody might desperately need.

This is so important and relatable ⬇️⬇️

This is something I find many riders (myself included) struggle with and it’s completely natural!

Most of us are taught from the start to steer with the reins. It becomes instinct to pull right, go right. But horses are incredibly attuned to our body. They feel a subtle shift in our seat, the tension in our legs, even the energy behind our breath.

And yet, when something goes wrong, our first reaction is often to grab at the reins. More pressure. More pulling. More confusion…

But reins should be a whisper, not a command. A final piece of communication, not the first.

When we start riding from our seat, core, and intention, things begin to change. Transitions become smoother. Bends feel natural. The horse begins to listen rather than just react.

💡 Next time you ride, ask yourself:

— Can I prepare this movement with my seat and posture before even using my reins?
— Are my hips following and guiding, or am I trying to steer from the front?

Your horse is listening not just to your hands, but to your whole body 💃🏼

ABOUT US

Greenways Stables is an ABRS (Association of British Riding Schools) and Pony Club Approved Centre. We are also an Approved Training Centre for KEITS (www.keits.co.uk), and offer Apprenticeships in Horse Care for dedicated, motivated and enthusiastic individuals wishing to pursue a career in the equine industry. We have a 100% success rate so far with all our students and members taking both leisure and professional exams.

We have 13 horses and ponies, ranging from the very small (11hh) to the very tall (17.3hh) and many in between. All our horses and ponies are carefully selected to match the requirements of their riders, and they are all inspected during our annual license check, for which we have recently been awarded 5* - the highest rating possible!

OUR LICENSE IS ISSUED BY GUILDFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL. REFERENCE NO. AWRL047

We are dedicated to providing friendly, professional tuition in horse riding and stable management, and love seeing our clients enjoy the activities we offer, whether it is a hack in the countryside, or a happy face at the end of a Pony Morning. There is something for everyone- we cater for both adults and children. Childrens’s lessons start at 6 years old; walkouts on the leading rein can be arranged for 4-6 year olds.
