Behind every patient’s journey is a veterinary nurse making a difference! We caught up with some of our team to find out why they became a vet nurse. 💙

Little Talulah is enjoying some TLC from the team this afternoon. Surgical Resident Dr Pete Swart repaired her fracture and RVN Jasmine is on the case with her recovery after surgery ❤️‍🩹

You may recognise sweet Pickle from last week’s post. 🐾

This lovely little dachshund recently underwent spinal surgery at Fitzpatrick Referrals after an intervertebral disc extrusion left her unable to walk independently. Neurology Resident Sara Peverelli performed Pickle’s surgery under the supervision of Neurology Specialist Nadia Shahib, carrying out a left-sided T13-L1 hemilaminectomy to relieve pressure on her spinal cord.

Just six days later, Pickle was able to walk again as she headed home with her family. 💙

Recovering from spinal surgery can be a long journey, requiring patience, rehabilitation and determination, so seeing patients like Pickle regain their mobility is incredibly special for everyone involved in their care.

We’re wishing this brave little daxie continued progress and many happy adventures ahead. 🐶

🩺 Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM) is this year recognising the compassion and empathy that sit at the heart of veterinary nursing.

We spoke with Clinical Nurse Lead Amelia about her role in practice, from delivering hands-on patient care to supporting and mentoring colleagues within a busy referral hospital environment.

As a Clinical Nurse Lead, Amelia plays a vital role in both patient outcomes and team development, helping to guide those around her while ensuring every animal friend receives the highest standard of treatment and support.

This year’s VNAM theme ‘compassion and empathy’ is something our nursing teams demonstrate every day, in every interaction, for both patients and the families who love them. 💙 🐾

Happy Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month!

We’re so pleased to see Emily and Casey take the next step in their veterinary careers as they begin their student nurse training with us and MYF Training.

Both are familiar faces and started with us as veterinary care assistants - Emily in our prep team and Casey in our neurology team - so it’s brilliant to see them building on that experience and growing into their new roles.

Wishing you both every success as you start this exciting chapter, continuing to learn, develop, and make a difference to the animals in our care. 💙

Sunday snuggles for dear Daxie patient Frankie, pictured with RVN Tia. 🐶🤗

Poor little Frankie was referred to our neurology team earlier this week as an emergency spinal case. She underwent a left-sided T12–T13 hemilaminectomy with Surgical Resident Lavinia Economu and Senior Neurologist Katia Marioni-Henry. During surgery, a significant amount of disc material was removed and her spinal cord was successfully decompressed. Fenestrations were also performed on discs at high risk of future extrusion.

Brave Frankie can be a little nervous at times, but wearing her ‘cone of courage’, she’s doing brilliantly and our lovely patient care team have helped her to feel right at home.

Wishing Frankie all the best with her recovery when she is reunited with her mum to return home next week. 🐾💙

A lovely message from Sophie’s dad after her elbow surgery 💙

Sweet Sophie, a 9-year-old crossbreed, recently had canine unicompartmental elbow (CUE) surgery with Senior Clinician James Guthrie. Her dad kindly shared this heartfelt message with our team afterwards, and we’re so grateful he took the time to write to us. 💙

“Just wanted to say thanks to the team for all they have done for our girl Sophie. She is still getting used to the strange heavy thing that used to be her leg, but as time passes, she will learn to cope I’m sure.

As a mechanic and having recently had a quadruple heart bypass, I know humans and dogs are not like engines, you don't just fit new parts and run around like new again, so we are aware that things can still go wrong, the surgery procedure could fail, get infected, be rejected, or...as with myself, she could recover perfectly and be better than before and we will get many more years together, travelling to new places and old, swimming, sitting beside me in my truck, retrieving pigeons when we go shooting in the fields, chewing tennis balls and giving us her love. Thank everyone again for that chance.”
Sophie’s dad

Thank you for such thoughtful words. We’re wishing Sophie and her family many happy adventures together in the years ahead. 💙
