Finally got my computer back after 3 weeks of it being away. The CPU and the cooling system were faulty. It's now running much better and far quieter, must have been on their way out for a while.

I got Mr Moo's (right) gallery finished yesterday and I'm working on Womble's gallery this weekend. Then I'm caught up from before...

I'm working on how everything will work going forward, which will take me the next 5 weeks to get in place.

If you keep an eye out I'm going to drop some sessions in the meantime, these will limited.

Just wanted to check in with everyone about where I'm at...

I want to start getting back to work.

Not going to lie, it's still really tough emotionally but I need to start moving forward.

My computer is away being repaired, hopefully getting it back this week. Then I'll get the last couple of sessions edited that I need to finish from before... Sorry it's taking so long, I had wanted to get to them before now but the computer was playing up and has been away for a while now.

Once I have my computer back and it's working properly I'll reintroduce some studio sessions.

I'm starting this weekend with a business coach to get everything set up correctly. It's probably going to take me a month or so to get everything in place.

Claire had been working on a new website for me and I'd like to get that finished as well. I've still not been able to update the about page since Buk and Rora died, that was 6 years ago now. Fen, Zepp and Ruckus deserve to be there. It's going to be extra difficult as Claire features heavily - she needs to be there still, I'd never be doing this if it wasn't for her.

I'm going to run a wee offer in the meantime. Watch out for details.

Again thank you all for the kindness you have shown me since I lost Claire ❤️

I hate this and feel really weird about it...

A friend made a Go Fund Me to help me in the aftermath of Claire's death and a lot of people have been asking how they can give practical help. I've been reluctant to share this, I feel weird about it.

Claire had muscular dystrophy which weakened her muscles. Before I had even met Claire she needed a high level of support to help her manage all the day to day tasks we take for granted.

When we moved in together 18 years ago I became Claire's primary care giver. We did think about finding extra support initially but it would have been quite an intrusion into our lives and require compromises that we didn't want to make. So for 18 years I provided most of the day to day care giving with the help of Claire's mum.

I was happy to do it as it meant I was with Claire. I'm not going to pretend it was always easy but I don't regret for a second the time it gave me with Claire.

Over 10 years ago now Claire set up her business, Wildflowers and Pixels, and at around the same time I set up Mutley's Snaps. Claire's business thrived and afforded us a a good life. I always saw Mutley's Snaps more as a project for me that was separate to my care giving role, not necessarily as a business that could support us/me. Times were I have tried to move the business forward I've been hit with major set backs that have knocked my business and confidence - COVID for example where we had to retreat from society for several years to protect Claire. In recent years Claire has needed more support, meaning the times I could leave her alone were reduced to an hour, maybe two at push. That had a big impact on me.

Our unspoken deal was always I provided Claire with the support that she needed to live and she took care of us financially.

We couldn't have life insurance or mortgage protection for Claire, they would never had paid out due to her muscular dystrophy. The car went away a few weeks ago as that was linked to Claire.

When you spend your life caring for someone and that role suddenly comes to an end there is no support or safety net in place.

Right now everything is so overwhelming. The grief at losing Claire, the loneliness, the thought of starting over again alone, money worries. It's all just too much and I'm trying my hardest not to let it consume me.

I really want to get the business up and running to a place where it can support me and our boys(Ruckus, Fen and Zepp). It's going to take some time - I need to set it up properly for success and somehow get through all these emotions that feel like they will drown me at any moment.

I sat down and worked out my yearly outgoings today and it was far higher than I'd thought. The dog and cats are costing a crazy amount per year alone.

So I've caved and shared the Go Fund Me.

My friend set it up to give me some breathing space to deal with my grief and the massive change in my life. If you would like to help or even share I'd be grateful.

People have been so kind. Checking in on me and offering support. I'm grateful for it all. The friends who have being coming in. The global network of dog photographers that have been checking to make I'm eating. Claire's mum and sister who are always checking in, and running me around while I don't have a car.

I'm grateful for it all.

In 2023 I helped create Not a Retreat. Because it isn't one.
The first one was brilliant. It was also exhausting. We packed in too much, there was too much driving, too much stuff, and by the end of the week everyone - including me - was running on empty. Great memories, but I came away knowing I could do it better.

So I stripped it back. Not a Retreat 2026 is slower, more relaxed, and more intentional. Same spirit. Less chaos.

Not a Retreat is a week in the Scottish Highlands for professional and aspiring professional dog photographers. No curriculum. No timetable. Just a small group of photographers, the Cairngorms National Park, and a lot of dogs.

Here's what the week looks like:

- 4 to 5 dog photography shoots out in the Cairngorms National Park - possible locations include Ruthven Barracks, An Lochan Uaine, Loch Morlich (yes, there's a sandy beach and possibly paddleboarding dogs), and Uath Lochan. The exact number of shoots and days out will be decided collectively with attendees before the week begins - this is your week as much as mine

- 7 nights self-catering accommodation in Kingussie - shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs all a couple of minutes walk from the house

- Aviemore just a short drive away for bigger shops and more food and drink options

- Inverness and Loch Ness within reach for those who want to explore

- Co-hosted by Ruckus, golden retriever, full time model, zero respect for personal space

This isn't a workshop. I won't be standing at the front of a room with a slide deck. But I will be there all week - so if you want to pick my brain, talk cameras, or just chat dogs, I'm yours.
There's something that happens when you put a group of like-minded photographers together for a week that no formal education can replicate. Ideas get shared, techniques get swapped, and friendships get built. That's what Not a Retreat is about.

- 4th - 11th September 2026
- Kingussie, Cairngorms National Park, Scottish Highlands
- 8 rooms available - single, twin and triple occupancy
- Rooms are £1500($2000 USD give or take) - you share the room you split the cost

One small thing I ask - any dogs who model for us during the week deserve something in return. All attendees are asked to provide a selection of edited digital images to the owners as a thank you for their time.

Applications are open now. Link below

Good company. Questionable light (it's Scotland — we knew what we were signing up for). Excellent dogs.

Would really appreciate you sharing and bigging it up even if you can't attend!

Not a Retreat 2026

Friday 4th Sept to Friday 11th Sept.

Kingussie, Scottish Cairngorms.

What is Not a Retreat? It's not an educational retreat.

But kind of is a retreat, for professional or aspiring professional pet photographers. It's a week long retreat where you can network and spend time with your people!

And of course there will be dog photography shoots in the Cairngorm National Park.

Ruthven Barracks(Google it) is a 5 minute drive from the house and will absolutely be a shoot location.

Don't worry you will learn stuff. It's all about sharing with the other attendees and I will be on hand for you to pick my brain.

It's self catering but I will provide things for DIY breakfasts.

There is a train station a minutes walk from the house.

Pricing is simple - £1500($2000 USD) a room. If you share a room, you share the cost. Twin room £750 each, there are also triples for £500 per head if people want to cut costs. All rooms are ensuite.

Full details coming soon.

Today I found out that Claire gave:

A kidney and her pancreas to a lady in her 30s who'd been waiting for more than 4 years.

A kidney to a lady in her 50s who had been waiting for over 6 years.

Her liver went to a lady in her 20s.

Always my hero ❤️

Finding out this has broken down a wall and I've been a blubbering wreck since.

This morning I dropped Kristen and Elke off at the car rental place, and they are off to the Woofventures House. I'm sure they will make it a super fun week for everyone going.

Last night myself and Kristen took Ruckus to a bluebell woods. This was the only decent picture I got of Ruckus without his tongue hanging to the ground... He was too hot.

I was really looking forward to this year's Woofventures House but it's just too soon for me.

I do have something super interesting for dog photographers coming September this year!
