A reminder of Adam the Adder's Top Tips 🐍...
Adders are now starting to come out of hibernation with some spotted on the Common. Record any sightings on www.recordpool.org.uk.
Stay calm - no harm.🐍

⚠️What to do if your dog gets bitten....

A snakebite is always an emergency. The single most important rule is get your dog to a vet immediately while keeping them as still and calm as possible. Everything else is secondary.

🐾🐍
- Keep your dog still
Movement spreads venom faster through the bloodstream. Carry them if you can.

- Stay calm yourself
Your dog will mirror your stress. Speak softly and move slowly.

- Call your vet immediately
Let them know you’re on the way so they can prepare antivenom and emergency care.

- Keep the bite site untouched
Leave it alone; no squeezing, rubbing, or cleaning.

- If safe, note what the snake looked like
A photo from a distance can help, but only if it doesn’t delay getting to the vet.

- Transport quickly but gently
Use a car brought to the dog if possible to avoid walking.

🐾🐍

🚫 What to NOT DO under any circumstances

- Do NOT try to suck out the venom
This is ineffective and can worsen the injury.

- Do NOT apply a tourniquet or tight bandage
This can cause severe tissue damage and does not stop venom spread.

- Do NOT chase or try to kill the snake
You risk another bite, and in the UK adders are protected.

- Do NOT wait for symptoms
Signs can take minutes to an hour, and delaying treatment can be fatal.
