🐟 FISH CARE SUNDAY: HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CHANGE MY FILTER MEDIA? 🧽
One of the most common mistakes in fishkeeping is replacing or cleaning all your filter media at once — but your filter is home to important beneficial bacteria that help keep your water safe.
🧽 Filter floss/wool: Replace when it becomes dirty or clogged.
🖤 Sponges: Rinse when needed, usually when water flow starts to slow. Don’t replace them unless they’re breaking down.
🪨 Biological media: This can often last for years. If it needs cleaning, gently rinse it in old aquarium water rather than tap water.
🧪 Chemical media: Replace according to the manufacturer's instructions, as its lifespan varies depending on the product.
💧 Top tip: Never clean or replace all your filter media at the same time — you could remove too much of your beneficial bacteria and cause water quality problems.
