Crissie Messina
BHS Accredited Professional Coach - Trail leader

My philosophy emphasises relationship-based training, valuing the bond between horse and rider over performance. Based in Edinburgh, I am happy to travel anywhere in Edinburgh, East Lothian, Midlothian, West Lothian and South Fife. My philosophy is centred on relationship-based training that values the bond between horse and rider

over performance. I believe in fostering a respectful, 50/50 conversation where both horse and rider listen to each other. Learning should be enjoyable and safe, with a focus on improving skills in a relaxed environment. Horses are individuals deserving of respect and fair communication, not tools. As we prioritise their welfare, I am dedicated to promoting partnership in horsemanship. "We must learn to listen without words; horses speak through their subtle movements and emotions, and to communicate properly, we must first understand them."

🐴 Frequently Asked Question: Why do the children share one pony during “A Pony as a Friend”?
It’s a question we get asked often!
“Do the children get one pony each?”
No. Our A Pony as a Friend experiences are intentionally designed around one pony that the family shares together.
Unlike a traditional riding lesson, the focus isn’t simply on riding. It’s about building a relationship with the pony, learning to understand their needs, and discovering what it means to be a kind, respectful partner to an animal.
Children take turns grooming, leading, caring for, and riding the pony, learning patience, empathy, communication, and teamwork along the way.
The pony is not just a ride, is a teacher, a companion, and the heart of the experience. ❤️
That’s why we call it A Pony as a Friend.

☀️ Happy Summer Solstice ☀️
The longest day of the year is a reminder to slow down, step outside, and reconnect with nature.
There’s something special about spending these long summer evenings in the Pentland Hills, open skies, fresh air and the quiet companionship of horses.
Whether you’re joining us for a scenic trek, a riding lesson, or a family pony experience, this is our favourite time of year to share the outdoors with you.
Here’s to sunshine, adventure, and making the most of every extra hour of daylight. 🌿🐴

A few spaces are still available this June — book via the link in our bio.

Why do people keep coming back? It's not just the riding
Slide 1: Horses are incredibly sensitive. They respond to how you feel, not just what you do, which means being around them teaches you to regulate yourself in a way nothing else quite does. Slide 2: Whether it's a trek through the Pentlands or a quiet session with a pony, the effect is the same: your nervous system slows down and your mind clears. Slide 3: We hear this from clients constantly. People come out to ride and leave feeling lighter. That's the real value of what we offer here.

Ever wonder if horses choose their friends? Or is it just pure instinct?

The truth is actually quite fascinating, horses are highly social animals that do form real preferences for certain companions. Research on equine behaviour shows they develop stable social bonds, often choosing to spend more time, groom, and stay close to specific individuals in the herd. These “friendships” are linked to familiarity, personality, and comfort rather than random grouping.

Just like humans, they can have preferred partners, avoid others, and build long-term social connections that help reduce stress and increase wellbeing. Some horses even show strong “pair bonds,” choosing to stay near each other consistently.

So it’s not just instinct, it’s a mix of instinct, individuality, and real social choice.
And honestly… if you spend enough time around them, you start to see just how intentional those connections feel.

Slow Down & Reconnect with Nature, In a world that never stops, this is your reminder that it’s okay to slow down.

Summer doesn’t have to mean being constantly busy. Some of the most meaningful moments of this season are the quieter ones, long evenings, green hills, and fresh air that helps you breathe a little deeper.

Coming out to ride or trek with us is a conscious choice to step away from the noise, be present, and reconnect with yourself through nature and horses.
That’s what we’re here for.

Imagine your yoga mat set under open skies, fresh air all around and horses quietly grazing nearby. We’re hosting outdoor yoga sessions here at Scozia and our next one is on the 20th of June.

There’s something about practising in the presence of horses that shifts everything. It becomes calmer, more grounded, more connected. Yoga can also be incredibly beneficial for riders, a gentle way to release tension, improve posture, and enjoy a mindful morning stretch for the back and body.

Whether you’re a regular yogi or just curious to try something new, this is for you.
✨ £10 per ticket
✨ Drop a 🧘 in the comments if you’d like to come, or DM us for detail
