This week, the kindest walk is no walk at all. 🚫

With temperatures reaching up to 38°C in some places, pavements can become hot enough to burn paws in seconds. 🌡️

Your dog doesn’t need a walk that badly. They need you to keep them safe.

Heat warning for the next few days

Hot weather can be dangerous for dogs.

Dogs do not cope with heat in the same way we do. They mainly cool themselves by panting and through their paw pads, so warm weather can become risky very quickly.

For the next few days, my Extreme Weather Policy will be in place.

This means walks may be:

• moved to cooler parts of the day
• shortened
• changed to shaded, slower sniff walks
• replaced with a home visit, garden break or enrichment time if needed

Your dog’s welfare will always come first.

As a rough guide:

15°C to 20°C
Generally comfortable for most dogs.

21°C to 24°C
Take extra care. Shade, water and slower walks are important.

25°C to 29°C
Too hot for many dogs, especially during exercise or midday walks.

30°C+
Danger zone. High risk of heatstroke.

Please watch for warning signs:

• excessive panting
• drooling
• weakness
• vomiting
• bright red gums
• confusion
• collapse

If your dog shows signs of overheating, move them to a cool place, offer small sips of water, and contact a vet straight away.

Also, remember the pavement test.

If the ground feels too hot for your hand, it is too hot for their paws.

Early walks, shade, water and rest can save lives.

Stay safe and keep dogs cool.

⚠️ SHARE to help keep dogs safe this heatwave. ☀️🐶

As the weather heats up, here’s a reminder to help keep your dog safe and comfortable on hotter days.

🐾 Never leave your dog in the car
🐾 Walk earlier in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler
🐾 Check pavements before walkies – paws can easily burn. If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to walk on
🐾 Keep fresh drinking water topped up
🐾 Look out for signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting, lethargy or vomiting.

If you think your dog may be suffering from heatstroke, contact your vet immediately.
