Why Fascia is important in Pain Management

A really great article in Veterinary Practice News.

The article emphasises that fascia, long overlooked in conventional (“allopathic”) medicine plays a critical role in pain assessment and treatment. As scientific understanding evolves, fascia is now recognised as a dynamic, innervated, and communicative tissue network rather than a passive wrapping.

Dr. Narda G. Robinson argues that clinicians treating pain must understand:

🟢 What fascia is: a continuous, responsive connective-tissue system that influences movement, posture, proprioception, and nociception.

🟢 Why it matters: fascial dysfunction such as stiffness, adhesions, densification, or altered gliding can contribute significantly to chronic and acute pain.

🟢 How it affects treatment: addressing fasciopathy requires approaches that restore tissue mobility, hydration, and sensory balance, rather than focusing solely on muscles, joints, or nerves.

As fascia becomes increasingly acknowledged within mainstream medical practice, integrating fascial assessment and therapy into pain management is essential for more complete and effective patient care.

Join me over the next couple of days for my mini serious on winter care for senior dogs, where I will talk about things to watch out for and steps you can take to help them through this challenging time of year.☃️

Winter hits us all hard and it can be especially tough for the dogs in their golden years. First thing to note is a dog’s breed and size influences the age at which they are classed as senior:
❄️Small: 8-12 years old
❄️Medium: 7-10 years old
❄️Large: 6-8 years old
❄️Giant: 5-6 years old
Maybe your dog is classed as senior and you have only@just realised reading this post!

As it gets cold and wet watch out for these more subtle indicators of pain and discomfort:
❄️Reluctance to go on walks/ hiding
❄️Keeping to themselves
❄️’getting old’ or slowing down
❄️Less willing to be touched
❄️Difficulty getting in/out the car or on/off sofa
❄️Getting ‘grumpy’/reactive/barking more

This is their way of letting their guardians know they need assistance, they are communicating they are in pain/discomfort. Do not ignore them!

Give this post a like if you have noticed any of these signs in your dog or someone else’s dog. 👵🏼👴🏻
