🐾 Rescue dogs are not “damaged goods.” 🐾

Every rescue dog comes with a story - sometimes a hard one - but that doesn’t make them broken. It makes them resilient.

My own dog, Ollie, was a rescue we brought home at just 10 months old with a whole list of challenges. He wasn’t “easy” and he didn’t come ready-made - but he has taught me more about patience, growth and joy than I could ever have imagined.

Yes, rescue dogs might need time, patience and understanding. They might carry habits from their past or take a little longer to trust. But that doesn’t mean they’re less capable of love, fun and progress than any other dog.

Rescue doesn’t mean “problem.” It means opportunity.
An opportunity to rewrite a chapter.
An opportunity to learn together.
An opportunity to build something new and beautiful.

So let’s stop the myth that rescue dogs are “too much work” or “second best.” With the right support, they thrive - and often show us just how incredible second chances can be. 💛

🐾 Consistency is Key 🐾

Dogs thrive on clear, predictable patterns. If you ask for a behaviour one day, then let it slide the next, it’s like handing them a puzzle with missing pieces - confusing and frustrating.

And here’s the good news - we aren’t talking about 30-minute training sessions three times a day. Consistency is about the little things:
✔️ Using the same cues each time
✔️ Rewarding what you want more of
✔️ Setting boundaries that stay the same no matter the day
✔️ Slotting in a quick training session while the kettle boils

The more consistent you are, the quicker your dog learns what works. It’s not about perfection - it’s about building trust, clear communication, and setting your dog up for success.

✨ The little things you do every day add up to big changes over time.

💛 Accepting your dog for who they are 💛

Not every dog is the life of the party. Some love a busy café, others would rather sniff the hedgerows in peace. Some want to greet every person and dog, while others are happiest sticking close to their human.

I had to learn this lesson with my own boy. Ollie isn’t always the calm, collected dog people expect from a trainer’s dog - sometimes he’s a whirlwind, distracted by the world, or just a bit crazy. And that’s ok. He doesn’t need to be perfect, he just needs me to accept him, guide him, and celebrate the dog he actually is.

Training isn’t about changing your dog into something they’re not - it’s about helping them feel safe, confident, and understood in the world they live in.

When we stop comparing and start accepting, that’s when the real magic happens.

So here’s your reminder: your dog doesn’t need to fit anyone else’s checklist. They just need to feel supported and celebrated for exactly who they are.

(P.S. yes he can jump the height of me without much effort 🙃)
