Summer is brilliant - but it does ask a bit more of our horses.

Longer days, warmer temperatures, more sweating, and more energy being used just to stay comfortable. It's the time of year when what they're eating really starts to matter, and when we're most grateful to have Keyflow Feeds as part of our routine.

For our stallions, mares, and youngsters, summer management is about more than just keeping water buckets topped up. It's about making sure they've got the right nutritional support to stay settled, maintain condition, and keep doing what they do - growing, developing, and thriving - even when the heat is on.

Pink mash is great not only for making sure they're getting the right nutrition, but because we soak it, we can make sure they're also getting plenty of water, too!

Conformation gets talked about a lot in the horse world - but it can feel like a minefield if you're not sure what you're actually looking for. So let's break it down.

Conformation isn't about perfection. No horse is perfect. It's about understanding what a horse's structure tells you about their future soundness, trainability, and longevity.

Here's what we focus on:

🔹 The shoulder - A long, sloping shoulder allows for bigger, freer movement. A upright shoulder tends to produce shorter, choppier strides. For dressage, you want that slope.

🔹 The back - A short, strong back with good muscling is ideal. A very long back can be harder to collect and more prone to weakness. But proportion matters - it needs to fit the horse.

🔹 The hindquarters - This is where the power comes from. Good depth through the hindquarter, with well-angled hocks, gives you the engine for collection and expression.

🔹 The legs - Straight, correct legs reduce the risk of soundness issues down the line. Small deviations are common and manageable. Major faults are worth taking seriously.

🔹 The neck - A well-set, arched neck that comes out of the shoulder correctly makes everything easier - contact, collection, carriage. It's not just about looks.

Conformation is one piece of the puzzle. But understanding it helps you make better decisions - and ask better questions.

The longest day of the year, and we're making the most of every minute of it.

There's something about midsummer on the yard that feels almost magical. The light at 9pm. The horses still out, relaxed and content. The youngsters who've grown so much since January that you almost have to remind yourself they're the same horses.

This is the time of year when you really see the results of everything that's gone before. The careful breeding decisions. The patient handling. The good nutrition and the space to just be horses. It all adds up to this - youngsters who are thriving, developing, and becoming exactly what you hoped they'd be.

We love this time of year. The long days feel like a gift, and we try to make the most of every one of them.

Here's to the longest day - and to all the horses who make it worth getting up for.

Two years old today.

Sky was born on 5th June 2024, which means a few weeks ago she turned two - and what a two years it's been.

Watching youngsters grow from those wobbly first days into the horses they're becoming is one of the genuine privileges of what we do. Sky has gone from a curious, confident foal to a curious, confident two-year-old - and that consistency of character is one of the things we love most about her.

She's got Mick's wonderful temperament running right through her. Settled, friendly, genuinely easy to be around. The kind of youngster who makes you excited about every stage of what's coming next.

Happy birthday, Sky. You're going to be something special.

As the 2026 breeding season starts to wind down, we've been doing a lot of reflecting.

Every year, we're reminded of why we do this. Not just the results - though we're incredibly proud of those - but the conversations. The mare owners who trusted us with their plans. The questions asked, the decisions made together, the excitement of waiting to see what arrives.

Breeding is a long game. You make a decision in spring and you wait. You wait through the pregnancy, through the birth, through the early weeks when everything feels fragile and precious. And then, slowly, you start to see what you've created.

We talk a lot about temperament - and rightly so. But let's talk about movement. Because when it comes to evaluating a dressage prospect, knowing what you're actually looking at makes all the difference.

Here's what we look for:

🔹 Rhythm - Does the horse move with a consistent, clear beat in each pace? Rhythm is the foundation everything else is built on. A horse who naturally finds rhythm will always be easier to train than one who has to be held together.

🔹 Elasticity - Is there swing through the back? Does the movement feel like it flows, rather than being tight or choppy? Elastic movement is what gives dressage that beautiful, effortless quality.

🔹 Engagement - Does the horse naturally step under with the hindleg? Engagement is what creates power and expression. You can develop it, but a horse who shows natural engagement from the start has a real head start.

🔹 Balance - Does the horse carry itself, or does it fall onto the forehand? Natural balance makes everything easier - transitions, collection, lateral work. It's one of the most underrated qualities in a young horse.

🔹 Expression - Does the movement have presence? Does it make you want to watch? Expression is what separates a good mover from a truly exciting one.

Movement matters. But it's only part of the picture - which is why we always look at the whole horse.

Summer on the yard brings a whole new set of things to think about - and one of the most important is making sure your horses are staying properly hydrated and supported through the warmer months.

We've been using as part of our youngsters', mare's and stallion's routine for a long time, and as the temperatures start to climb, it's something we think about even more carefully. Horses who are growing, developing, and training need the right support to keep them feeling their best, and what they eat plays a huge part.

The difference good nutrition makes isn't always obvious when you're looking at them every day, but over time it really starts to show. Better condition, better coats, horses who are settled and comfortable rather than fizzy or unsettled. It's something that works quietly in the background - which is exactly how we like it!

There are some horses who just stop you in your tracks. Lui is one of them.

Lyon's Louis Vuitton - or Lui, as everyone here calls him - has been one of those horses who's gathered a following almost without trying. And honestly, it's not hard to see why.

He's got presence, the kind that makes you look twice even when he's just walking across the field. But what really wins people over is his nature - he's kind, and he's got that wonderful combination of confidence and warmth that makes him an absolute joy to be around.

His breeding speaks for itself - but it's the horse he's become that we're most proud of. He's the sort of youngster who makes you feel like every decision you made along the way was the right one. The cross, the care, the time - it all shows.

We've watched so many of you fall for him over the past year, and we completely understand it. He's one of those horses who gets under your skin in the best possible way.
