πŸΎπŸ˜… Something that didn't go to plan... and what I did instead πŸ˜…πŸΎ

Running a dog walking and training business means becoming very good at adapting when things don't quite go to plan.

A recent example? The heatwave β˜€οΈπŸ₯΅

Like many dog professionals, I had walks, training sessions, and activities planned. But as the temperatures and humidity started climbing, it became clear that carrying on as normal wouldn't be fair on the dogs.

So instead, we adapted.

🏑 Some walks became home visits
🌳 We moved to shorter walks in cooler, shaded areas
πŸ’§ We carried extra water and took regular breaks
⏰ We adjusted timings where possible
🐢 Some dogs enjoyed enrichment and garden time instead of their usual walk
πŸ“… We rescheduled or cancelled appointments where needed

Was it the week I originally planned? Not at all.

But one of the most important lessons I've learned is that sometimes success isn't sticking rigidly to the plan. It's recognising when the plan needs to change.

At the end of the day, the dogs' welfare will always come first, even if that means doing things differently than expected πŸ’›πŸΎ

The dogs don't care whether we completed the original plan. They care that they're safe, comfortable, and having their needs met.

And that's exactly how it should be πŸΆπŸ’›

πŸ€”πŸΎ THIS or THAT? πŸΎπŸ€”

When your dog comes back to you when called, which approach would you choose?

πŸ…°οΈ "Good dog" and then that's it.

OR

πŸ…±οΈ Reward them with something they love.

If you've been following me for a while, you'll probably know which one I'm picking! πŸ˜‚

For me, it's definitely B.

Whether that's:
πŸ– Food
🎾 A game with a toy
πŸ₯° A fuss and cuddle
🌳 Being released back to explore

I want my dogs to think:

"Coming back to my human is the best decision I've made all day!"

Too often, owners worry about "bribing" their dog or using rewards for too long.

But if your dog has done something you'd like them to do again, why wouldn't you make it worthwhile for them? 😊

After all, recall is one of the most important skills we can teach our dogs, and a strong reinforcement history helps make that behaviour reliable.

So...

πŸ‘‡ What's your answer: A or B?

β“πŸΎ FAQ Friday! πŸΎβ“

One of the questions I get asked a lot is:

"When can I stop using treats in training?" πŸ€”

The short answer?

Probably never completely... and that's okay! 😊

First of all, I like to use a dog's daily food allowance where possible, rather than relying on lots of extra treats. Your dog has to eat anyway, so why not use some of that food to reinforce good choices? 🐢🍽️

As training progresses, we can start increasing the time between rewards and making reinforcement less predictable. This helps build stronger behaviours without needing a piece of food every single time.

We can also introduce other forms of reinforcement, which I like to call the **4 F's**:

πŸ– Food
🎾 Fun
πŸ₯° Fuss
🌳 Freedom

For some dogs, a treat is the best reward. For others, being released to sniff a bush, chase a toy, or receive a fuss from their favourite person can be just as valuable.

The important thing to remember is that we should always pay our dogs for their efforts. After all, if your boss stopped paying you because you'd been doing your job for a few months, you'd probably have something to say about it! 🀭

And if a little snacky snack helps your dog learn and make good choices... why not use it? πŸΎπŸ’›
