Puppies need to play but do not let them learn bullying behaviours with the older resident dog. They will practice this in play with other dogs in the park and itโ€™s not fair on the older dog. Play can quickly escalate into fighting once the emotional bucket overloads. 1. Break up play fighting periodically to empty the bucket of emotions. 2. Watch to see if both dogs instigate play or is one dog trying to hide and get away. 3. Place a puppy house line on a soft harness to guide puppy away, do not verbally correct unless it is a clear cue for an alternative behaviour. Verbal correct can heighten the emotions. 3. Be sure that any socialising classes or daycare are monitoring puppy behaviour. 121 behaviour and training available follow the link to book on PM https://my.timetrade.com/book/Z112M

Resource guarding is an inherent dopamine driven, perfectly normal behaviour to the dog to survive.
In a domestic environment this can quickly get out of control from human reactions, particularly with puppies; they explore their world with their mouths and pick everything up out of curiosity .
We make that more valuable and interesting by chasing them around to retrieve the item.

Teaching the dog to not feel they need to guard their resources and to leave items unless cued to take, and to drop items on cue, prevents guarding behaviour getting out of control.

A resource to a dog can be anything they feel they cannot survive without: food, water, bedding, spaces, people!

Hyper attachment or Separation Anxiety:

Puppies do not come pre-programmed to be happy to be left.
Some dog's learn over time with the natural process of our every day lives that they are separated from their owners and they were safe, so an element of learning is applied that being left is okay.
Some dogs do not learn this way. This can be because of previous experiences when left alone or they are just of an anxious disposition that cannot cope with the un known so they need to be trained to be left.
This can take time, by leaving the dog for seconds, then minutes etc whilst they can not get to you, but sense you are there. It can help if you have a cue that you are leaving, dogs like predictable patterns of behaviour and need to know what is going to happen, especially if they are an anxious dog.
Once they are happy to be left for a length of time whilst you are in the home, then you start training to go out of the door.
Dogs are very good at coping with some predictable situations of being left, as they learn that they were safe, but then an un expected parting can then be stressful to them, so be random with your leaving and cue the event.
