If I’m reacting to another dog, what I need most in that moment isn’t correction — it’s support.
When I bark, lunge, or fixate, it’s often because I feel overwhelmed or unsure about what’s in front of me. My body goes into “deal with it now” mode, and I’m not in a place where I can calmly learn something new.
What really helps is distance.
When you notice I’m starting to struggle and you calmly create space, my body has a chance to settle. That’s when I can start to look back at you, take food, and actually learn.
Over time, pairing those triggers with good things — at a distance I can cope with — helps change how I feel, not just how I behave.
Behaviour change starts with emotional change.
