🎂 Happy birthday Alf!
Alf the tapir turned 9 this week and celebrated with a tasty veggie 'cake'! But we don't want to let the festivities end! Join us in celebrating tapirs and the other wonderful wildlife of South America at Tilgate Zoo's Wild Weekend on 30th and 31st August in aid of World Land Trust! This charity protects acres of rainforest land to safeguard the home of the tapir and so many other species. Celebration and conservation; what's not to love? And we hear there may be cake this weekend too...

🐷 Tiny trotters incoming!
Our Berkshire pigs have had piglets! These little ones were born last week to new parents Sindy and Ken!
So far, Sindy seems to be taking motherhood in her stride. This makes sense: Berkshire pigs are known for their good maternal instincts and as they are a rare British breed, that is very encouraging to know! As different pig products have risen and fallen in popularity, so has the number of each heritage pig breed. Berkshire pigs had been on the decline, as other pig breeds such as the large white pig breed were favoured, but now there are concerted efforts to maintain this rare breed. Since that process means we all get to see sights such as braces of piglets like these along the way, then it sounds like a win-win! Why not come and see them this weekend?

Murder at Tilgate Manor

The family has gathered in the manor’s Walled Garden for the reading of Lord Tilgate’s will, but one of them has other plans. Secrets simmer, alibis shatter and only the sharpest guest will crack the case!

Dress to deceive, bring your character’s favourite drink, and solve the mystery before the killer escapes.

Date and time: Saturday 6 September 2025, Doors open at 6.30pm. Show from 7pm until 10pm (approx.)

Price: £45 per ticket. Over 18's only. Ticket includes the show, an arrival drink, and buffet-style dinner.

Location: The Walled Garden, Tilgate Park, Tilgate Drive, Crawley, RH10 5PQ.

Need to know: Murder at Tilgate Manor is best enjoyed in true detective era style. Guests are encouraged (but not required) to attend in Agatha Christie inspired fancy dress. Think flapper gowns, tweed suits, velvet gloves, monocles, and mysterious veils. Whether you're a cunning inspector or a glamorous suspect, dressing the part adds to the intrigue.

🐐 Are they 'kids' or 'teens'? My how they've grown!
On World Goat Day, we're reflecting back on how much our Bagot kids have grown up over the last four months. The kids were born back in April, and you can see their size on the left and the right is today! But since April, they've not only gotten much bigger but so confident too, we're so proud! However, we will keep an eye on those increasingly impressive horns!

🦎 Happy World Lizard Day! 🦎

As we celebrate some of our scaly friends today, it's the perfect opportunity to show off Apollo the black tree monitor's wonderful tail!

Black tree monitors have very long tails that make up 60-70% of their total length. They are prehensile, acting like an extra limb that can grasp branches and help these lizards move through their treetop homes. When they're resting, they can curl their tails up in an almost perfect spiral, as demonstrated beautifully by Apollo here. Fibonacci would be proud!!
