CVS Farm Vets

A great day at the British Vet Conference the Royal Agricultural College.

We had techs from Castle Farm Vets Alnorthumbria Farm Vets and Coast2Coast Farm Vets attending.

Some really engaging content, great data led idea and initiatives and a whole heap of ideas to take back to practice.

As a division we are working hard to optimise our Vet techs and RVNs.

Thank you to tech Kerra for this fab reel.

Great to see the Vet Exchange program working so well.

One of the positives about being part of a big collaborative group is that we are able to share resource and experiences.

Across our division, we support hundreds of UK dairy farmers who produce the milk we all enjoy every day. From large commercial herds of over 1,000 cows to smaller traditional systems of 40, their work is incredibly variedโ€”but consistently demanding.

With ongoing pressures around milk price volatility, rising input costs, and the day-to-day challenges of modern farming, itโ€™s a tough time to be in the industry. Despite this, our clients continue to show resilience, dedication, and a deep commitment to their livestock.

Every day we applaud their hard work and passion.

Today, 1st June 2026, is ๐Ÿฅ› and we celebrate our dairy farmersโ€”up at the crack of dawn (if not earlier), working 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Not just to keep milk on our cereal, but to ensure their cows are cared for to the highest standard.

๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฎ Thank you.๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฎ

A great snapshot of some fantastic CPD that CVS Farm Vets recently headed out on.

As a division, weโ€™re committed to empowering our teams across every role, and we always jump at the opportunity to step out of practice and explore farms, factories, and suppliers. Being able to see a product made from start to finish โ€” and even meet the experts behind the solution โ€” is a truly unique and valuable experience.

A group of vets, practice managers, SQPs, and farm administrators recently headed to North Wales for a tour of the Bimeda bolus factory. Gaining insight into the unique soluble glass technology behind the Cosecure and CoseIcure boluses was both fascinating and informative.

Thank you to Louise from Coast2Coast Farm Vets for not only driving the 7 hours each way for the trip, but also creating the fantastic video that we are sharing.

They will happily chat about their stock as well as yours so please feel free to ask them today!

Some of our earlier lambers are starting to look at first drenches in young lambs.

But SRUC (On the Hoof) have shared some alarming data about fatal dosing of young lambs:

Death of Young Lambs Following Inhalation of Mineral Drenches

We diagnosed inhalation of mineral drench as the cause of death in 3- to 4-week-old lambs at the end of last week. This has become a regular feature of late spring and early summer in recent years. Usually it is 6- to 8-week-old lambs that are affected following handling for multiple management tasks. These can include administration of anthelmintic and mineral drenches, clostridial and/or orf vaccination, tagging, castration/tailing and application of pour ons. Lambs that inhale mineral drench can become dyspnoeic and die very rapidly within 15 to 30 minutes of being handled. Others will die over the next 24 to 48 hours and losses commonly run into double figures.

Lung changes can be subtle and easily confused by postmortem change, but they may have a mottled appearance. Histopathology is required to confirm the diagnosis and shows acute airway necrosis consistent with recent inhalation of an irritant substance.

Therefore:
๐Ÿ‘Take care when administering oral mineral drenches to young lambs in order to avoid unnecessary deaths.
๐Ÿ‘Review whether administration of anthelmintic or mineral drenches is required- speak to your vet today
๐Ÿ‘ Use the correct applicators for the task in hand- we stock Lamb Dosing Guns in practice- again ask your vet today for the right equipment for your flock.
