's Livestock Vet Practice Award
Arwain DGC is an award-winning Welsh Government-funded programme, dedicated to preventing antibiotic resistance by supporting farmers and vets through data-driven decisions, innovative technologies, and best practices.
The annual awards celebrate the achievements of livestock veterinarians and farmers in reducing the need for antibiotics and taking steps to improve animal health.
Our 3 main areas we are reducing antibiotic usage:
1) Calf pneumonia: our practice delivers a Calf Growing Package which generates quarterly improvement reports based on Growth rates and disease incidence. This service has seen across the farms an improvement of 150grams/day growth rates, a reduction in pneumonia antibiotic usage and over 50% of the farms on the package now implement a pneumonia vaccination protocol.
2) Watery Mouth: our practice made the decision to place a large emphasis on management procedures around lambing, late last year. Prior to lambing our flock health club hosted meetings based on alternative products for lambs at birth and supportive therapy for sick lambs. This cut our amoxicillin and penicillin usage as a practice to sheep around lambing and it is something we will continue to encourage, with another flock health club meeting later this year scheduled, on colostrum management. Our objective is to increase farm colostrum testing, to ensure that healthy start!
3) Heat Stress: last year we saw an increase in both mastitis and lameness antibiotic usage over the hot period and this has been replicated again this year. Through newsletters, health plans and conversations on farm we have encouraged all of our clients to consider fly repellents, shade, animal comfort and water provisions leading up to summer. But we are now taking it a step further with a client focus group to Spain in September. So far we have done one meeting on the impact of heat on fertility and we have more presentations coming up to ensure the group focus on improvements we can take from Valencia to reduce heat stress and the impact it has on our animals.
