The BETC course is suitable for those with existing knowledge of, or experience with horses, although it is not essential to own your own horse. The course will give students the opportunity to acquire an industry recognised qualification that will enable you

to turn a real interest into a career or higher education pathway. Students will study a variety of different topics in considerable detail - even if you already feel competent in some areas you can be sure that there will be a great deal more to learn and to gain from this course. Previous experience is taken into consideration and will enable you to work at your own level. The course is taught predominantly from 3 oaks farm which houses a variety of horses: ex-racehorses, eventers and show jumpers. There will also be a number of excellent trips and visits throughout the course. If you are considering either a career in the equine sector or a related higher education pathway, then this course will be of great value. We have some very sad news to share. Unfortunately yesterday Jerry had to be put to sleep. As some of you are aware, he hasn’t quite been himself and despite extensive investigations from the vets, he sadly deteriorated again. Jerry has been with us since the start of the equine courses at the college and has taught so many students over the years. He was always excellent with students who were nervous and helped develop their confidence working with horses. Everyone at the yard will miss him tremendously.

❗RAGWORT WARNING❗

With the warm and wet weather we have been experiencing everything is growing, including ragwort!

Ragwort contains toxic compounds that are dangerous to horses and if eaten can have an accumulative damaging effect overtime, resulting in liver damage, leading to severe disease and even death.

You may think that your horse won’t eat ragwort, but the risks are often greater when the plant wilts and it loses its bitter taste. Although your horse may appear healthy, signs of illness often aren’t shown until the liver has reached 70% damage, which makes it very difficult to treat.

Be on the lookout for any ragwort growing in your field and don’t take any risks. Help stop the vicious cycle of ragwort growing in your pasture by pulling it up now!

Use our Ragwort Toolkit for advice on how to safely and effectively remove and dispose of ragwort. It also provides advice on who is responsible and how to resolve issues with neighbouring landowners.

❗ Equine Grass Sickness Awareness Week 2021 has arrived ❗

🌱Equine Grass Sickness (EGS) is a debilitating and frequently fatal disease, affecting horses, ponies and donkeys. The disease causes damage to parts of the nervous system and commonly affects the gut compromising the animal’s ability to swallow and digest food.

Across the UK most cases of EGS are reported in the spring and summer months so now is the time to be more aware.

Equine Grass Sickness Awareness Week is dedicated to providing more knowledge of EGS, sharing new research, and stories from horse owners whose beloved equines have been directly affected by the disease – view the page and see the schedule for the week below. 👇

Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) is a hormonal disorder which can affect any horse or pony, regardless of their weight. However, the condition is seen much more frequently in overweight animals, meaning the risk of developing EMS increases if your horse is overweight or obese.

❗With reports of around 50% of equines in the UK being overweight or obese the risk of EMS is a major concern❗

The main disorder of EMS is insulin dysregulation, which puts the horse at risk of laminitis and many other complex disorders. It is therefore really important to keep your horse at a healthy weight to help decrease the risk.

❓What strategies do you use to keep your horse’s weight healthy❓

⚠ Don’t get caught out by laminitis ⚠

Laminitis is an extremely painful condition affecting 1 in 10 horses/ponies every year 🐴

❗️ Prevention is always better than cure especially as laminitis can cause extreme pain, lameness, permanent damage to the hooves and can increase the risk of future episodes.

The infographic below gives some great advice on laminitis prevention.

❓ What do you regularly monitor and manage ❓
