Ingrid Grayling Dog Trainer

Ingrid Grayling Dog Trainer With over 35 years’ experience, I offer bespoke 1-2-1 dog training using my unique and simple training techniques.

Based at French’s Teign Valley Nursery, Christow EX6 7LB Dogs have always been a major part of my life and I have been training and working with them for over 35 years. My passion started not just at home when I was young but also when I worked during the school holidays at my local kennels near to where I lived, I spent many a happy weekend helping out and working there. I believe my knowledge is

as extensive as my experience with dogs. In my 20’s I trained and worked in London as a nurse and then moved to Cambridge to nurse at Addenbrookes Hospital before moving up to the north of England to start a family. I went on to set up a large boarding kennel establishment and training centre in the Ribble Valley in Lancashire. Through that experience I then decided to set up a small intimate Home from Home active holiday and boarding kennel business in Cumbria where I lived for around 25 years. In late 2019 I relocated my business to South Devon to be nearer my family, and where I currently work from. At the same time I also set up the training school and so was able to continue my passion of not just looking after other peoples’ dogs but training and behavioural work as well.

‘Training the Ingrid Grayling Way’ has been developed over the many years I have spent with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. I have endless enthusiasm, passion and a huge love of dogs, which I hope shines through when you meet me.

Meet Swift 🐾

Swift and I first met when his owner brought him to me for basic training.

As Swift lives in Wiltshire, a day course was the perfect option. It meant I could teach both stages of his training in one day, giving his owner everything they needed to continue the work at home.

Four weeks later, once the training had been completed at home, Swift’s owner only needed to return once for me to check that everything was working as it should and that the training was firmly in place.

Swift has a wonderfully gentle and kind nature. ❤️

But, like all sighthounds, he has exceptionally good eyesight… and very fast legs! 👀💨

That combination makes reliable training particularly important. Being able to respond to his owner, come back when called and make good choices gives Swift much more freedom while keeping him safe.

It was lovely to see his progress and to know that his owner now has the tools and confidence to continue building on his training.

Another lovely Swift success story. 🐕✨

Happy International Dog Day 🐾❤️

Anyone who has a dog knows they’re not just a pet. They become part of the family — always there for the walks, the adventures, the muddy paws, the laughs and, of course, the cuddles.

Today is a good excuse to give your four-legged friend an extra treat, a long walk and a bit of extra love. 🐶

Happy International Dog Day ❤️ This one of my favourite pictures of my lovely dog Lily who sadly is no longer here and my granddaughter..

A lovely review from a recent client 🐾❤️

It’s always incredibly rewarding to receive feedback from the people and dogs I’ve had the pleasure of working with.

This recent review highlights what dog training is all about — not simply changing a behaviour, but helping owners understand their dogs, build confidence and enjoy life together again.

Every dog and every situation is different, which is why I focus on practical, personalised training that works for both the dog and their owner.

Thank you to my wonderful client for taking the time to share their experience. It means a lot and I’m so pleased with the progress you’ve both made. 🐶💛

From frustration to confidence 🐾

One of the most rewarding parts of dog training is seeing the difference that the right guidance, consistency and understanding can make.

Recently, I worked with a lovely 7 month old Bedlington cross Whippet and owner who were struggling with everyday challenges that had started to affect their confidence and enjoyment together. Walks were stressful, certain behaviours were becoming difficult to manage, and their owner wasn’t always sure what to do next.

We took things step by step, focusing not just on the dog's behaviour, but on helping the owner understand why it was happening and how to respond calmly and consistently.

Over the course of our sessions, we saw some fantastic progress — better focus, improved communication and, most importantly, a much more confident relationship between dog and owner.

There is no magic overnight fix with dog training. The real success comes from building understanding and practical skills that can be used every day.

Seeing an owner go from feeling overwhelmed to feeling confident in handling their dog is exactly why I love what I do. ❤️

If you’re experiencing challenges with your dog’s behaviour, you don’t have to figure it all out alone.

🐾 “Can you train an older dog, or is it too late?”

This was one of the questions I was asked several times at the Christow Village Fair yesterday.

And the answer is: absolutely! 👍

One of the biggest misconceptions I come across is that dogs have to be trained when they’re puppies — and if they haven’t learnt something by then, you’ve missed your chance.

You haven’t. ❤️

Dogs continue to learn throughout their lives. In fact, when working with an older dog, we often have the advantage of knowing them really well — their personality, their habits, what motivates them and what situations they find difficult.

The key is understanding why a behaviour is happening rather than simply trying to stop it.

For example, a dog pulling on the lead, barking at other dogs or struggling to settle may not simply be a case of “bad behaviour”. There can be excitement, frustration, fear, uncertainty or simply a behaviour that has become a well-practised habit.

Once we understand the reason behind the behaviour, we can start teaching the dog what we do want them to do instead.

And that’s what I love about dog training — it’s not about having a “perfect” dog. It’s about helping dogs and their people understand each other better. 🐶❤️

Thank you to everyone who stopped to chat with me at the Christow Village Fair yesterday. I really enjoyed all the questions and conversations!

I’ll be at Chagford Show this coming Thursday, if you’re coming along and have a dog-training question come and see me for a chat.

“Can an old dog really be retrained?”
“Can you stop a dog chasing sheep?”
“Why won’t my dog come back?”
“Is my puppy too young to start training?”
“Can aggression be trained out?”
“Why does my dog behave perfectly at home but not outside?”
“Have I left it too late to train my dog?”

If you’ve ever found yourself asking one of these questions — or simply wondering “Is it just my dog?” — come and have a chat with me I’ll be at
- Christow Show this Saturday 15th
- Chagford Show on Thursday 20th

🐾 I’m heading to the Christow Show this Saturday 🐾

I’m really excited to be exhibiting at the Christow Show this Saturday — and it’s my first time at the show!

If you’re coming along, make sure you come and say hello. I’d love to chat with you about all things dog training and how I can help you and your dog, whether you’re working through a particular challenge, welcoming a new dog into your family, or simply wanting to build a happier, more confident partnership together.

Being based and working nearby, it’s always lovely to connect with local dog owners — and the Christow Show is such a lovely country show, so it’s the perfect opportunity to come along, have a great day out and meet some local businesses too.
